The range topping Golf - the Golf R - is the flagship for the Golf range, and the upcoming Golf R Mk7 will be the most powerful production Golf in history. The Golf R will be powered by a 2.0-litre TSI unit producing up to 286bhp and 379Nm of torque, and will be closely related to its cousin - the Audi S3.

The increased performance has not hindered fuel economy or emissions with figures of 17.2km/L and 163g/km respectively. The soundtrack accompanying the Golf R has been extensively tuned to 'growl' louder and sportier than before too.
Power from the Golf R can be sent to all four wheels thanks to the new Haldex 5 system akin to the new 4Motion. VW claims the Haldex 5 is capable of providing better handling, thanks to a faster transfer of power between the front and rear axles. The Golf R will also feature electronic differentials.
The Golf R is expected to be formally launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It will expand the Golf fleet together with six to seven other variants including the GTI, a Golf EV, and a Golf estate among others.
