TOYOTA GR SUPRA

With its platform and powerplant shared with the BMW Z4, along with the fact that the majority of the interior trimmings come straight from a BMW, the Supra's mixed German and Japanese heritage may rub some die hard fans the wrong way.

However, the Supra still sets itself apart in its own unique way. With its gorgeously sculpted exterior design, it's overall lightness, the impressively nimble and sharp handling, as well as its surprising all day comfort, the Supra is a captivating and special coupe in its own right.

This year's two nominees in the Coupe category truly exemplify what it means to put the driver front and centre. Small, compact two-seaters that deliver truly exciting and involving driving experiences, both the Lotus and the Toyota have the ability to capture any driver's attention.

The Lotus Exige is undeniably more stripped back and hardcore. While its mechanically raw driving experience is quite unique, it also comes with some drawbacks, especially on day-to-day driving.

Where the Supra sets itself apart is its ability to also admirably function as an everyday car. While some may lament the smattering of BMW parts within the cabin, there's no doubt that there is a sense of elevated quality, luxury and functionality.

Indeed, look past the low-slung, two-seater coupe silhouette and what you have is a car that's well-built, well-engineered and definitely comfortable enough for you to drive to work every day. The suspension also delivers ample suppleness to deal with any bumps on the road, and you won't have to fret when going over big road humps.

However, find an open stretch of road, open up the throttle, and the Supra comes to life. Thanks to its BMW-sourced 3.0-litre engine, the Supra packs plenty of power with 335bhp and 500Nm of torque. 0-100km/h takes 4.3 seconds, though on the road it actually feels quicker than that.

The most distinctive quality about the Toyota Supra, though, is its lightness and deft handling. With its sharp turn in, responsive steering and taut chassis, the Supra dances across the tarmac gracefully and delightfully. It still delivers a consummate sports coupe experience.

A sports coupe is undoubtedly about the impression it makes. With its gorgeous sheet metal, distinctive design and rare nature, the Supra is a special car. But it's not just a garage queen – get behind the wheel, and the Supra certainly manages to make you feel special. And, it is a feeling that you can enjoy every single day. That's why it emerges victorious in this category.
