The Audi A5 Cabriolet scores an A1 for its good looks, modern cabin and comfortable cruising capabilities.

28 Nov 2017

Based on the second generation A5 Sportback and the A5 Coupe, the topless A5 that's clad in an eye-catching Tango Red here is indeed seductive in more ways than one.

What do you mean it's seductive?

For starters, it's quite a looker. And we don't mean it looks nice only from the front. We mean it looks every bit modern and sleek from wherever you decide to view the car from.

The A5 Cabriolet is a highly desirable car, more so when viewed from the side

Secondly, it's got the convertible stuff, which quite simply means it'll drop its top at the touch of a button in the cabin or via the key fob in just 15 seconds. Putting it back on will take a slightly longer 18 seconds.

Thirdly, it's the attention to detail that makes you realise just how much thought has been put into this cabriolet. For instance, like the Audi R8, mini microphones have been cleverly mounted on the seatbelts to allow you to make calls with the top down without having the need to shout.

Lastly, the cabin is a delightful place to hang around. The simple and minimalistic layout gives the sense that everything is placed where they are for a reason. You don't have to second-guess the functions of the buttons or take a week to get used to the Multi Media Interface. Take your seat, meddle with the rotary pushbutton and within a quarter of a day, you'll be familiar with the car.

As with the Audi A5 Coupe, the seatbelts automatically extend to front passengers in sleek fashion

Sounds like you're an Audi expert

Nope, I can't say that I am. But the very fact that Audi keeps things elegant yet simple means it gives its owners, young or old, an opportunity to fully utilise the car's systems and functions freely and easily.

Ballerina on the road

Also freely and easily is the way the A5 Cabriolet behaves on the road. While many will disagree with arguments about how predictable it is, we see it quite differently.

Naysayers aren't wrong. The A5 Cab is undoubtedly predictable but it's also such a characteristic that endows the car with a pleasant drive. We will have to understand that being predictable does not mean the car is inadequate.

As with all Audi cars, the cabin is wonderfully put together

Driving the A5 Cab with its top down in the wee hours of the morning, it's evident just how much of a comfortable cruiser, almost grand tourer-like, this car is. It doesn't charge and it doesn't hustle. Instead, the Audi just glides along creamily as it swallows up tarmac like a German gulping his beer at Oktoberfest.

That said, there's no denying that it's no sports car, even if it's dynamically accomplished. It lacks the excitement and confidence to tackle twisties and feels a tad wobbly, even if the suspension setup is towards the firmer side and there's ample grip. The fact that you won't find much feedback from the steering enhances this, too.

With the roof in place (left), boot space is not severely compromised

Cruising the practical way

There's just no better way to enjoy the A5 Cabriolet than cruising in it with the top down with a couple of friends. Yes, a couple.

While most four-seater cabriolets often compromise space for style, the A5 Cab is capable of having three passengers, with a boot space of 380 litres to match a proper hatchback like the Audi A3 Sportback and the Volkswagen Golf.

As a matter of fact, the Audi does little to compromise anything. With a driving setup that feels comfortable, an interior that's easily the best in its class and an image that's highly desirable, it'll be foolish not to give it a chance if you're looking for a four-seater cabriolet.
