Audi clarifies its global standardisation of model names

To provide more clarity and ease for its customers, Audi has announced that it will be strengthening the uniformity of its nomenclature. Audi's original plan was to classify ICE models - including PHEVs - with odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7) and EV models with even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8). However, this has now been scrapped.
Going forward, its global alphanumeric model naming convention will consist of one or more letters and a number, with the letters A and Q signifying the distinction between a low-floor and high-floor vehicle respectively, and the numbers - currently from one to eight - enabling a clearer classification independent of the type of powertrain.
This now means that EV models can share the same combination of letters and numbers with ICE vehicles, with the necessary distinction done using the body style (e.g. Avant, Sedan, or Sportback) and the already established powertrain code (e.g. e-tron, TFSI e, TFSI, or TDI).
Audi's first new model to follow this new naming system will be the ICE-equipped A6, to be revealed globally on 4 March 2025. The body style and powertrain code distinction will also come into effect: For example, the A6 Avant TFSI will be clearly differentiated from the all-electric A6 Avant e-tron. Audi has also announced that no name changes are planned for models already on sale.
