The affected cars - covering a wide range of 2010 to 2012 model years - are believed to pose a potential defect with the variable camshaft timing, also known as VANOS.
According to a statement issued by BMW, the problem - if not rectified - could reduce engine power along with causing further damages.
The VANOS unit rotates the intake or exhaust camshaft in order to alter the timing of the lift of the respective intake or exhaust valves.
However in exceptional cases, the bolts holding the variable camshaft timing unit housing may become loose or - in extreme cases - break. When that occurs, the 'check engine' or 'service engine soon' light comes up, followed by the display of a 'check control' message. The issue would gradually worsen if the messages are ignored, and could lead to 'no start' conditions, stalling and even engine damage.
The affected models include - 2010 to 2012 model year - 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, X3, X5, X6, Z4 and 2012 model year 6 Series.
Shortly after the world's largest automaker, Toyota, issued a global recall covering 6.79 million cars, the North American arm of German luxury marque, BMW, has issued a voluntary recall covering roughly 156,137 units.
