BYD unveils first mini-EV at 2025 Japan Mobility Show

Developed to meet Japan’s minicar standards, the BYD Racco (which translates to "

sea otter" from Japanese) was unveiled at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show.

The Racco will slot right into the kei car category, which are microcars exclusive to the Japanese market and designed specifically for narrow roads and resource constraints.

Kei cars are well-received in Japan, as it benefits from policy incentives such as lower acquisition tax, making for a popular choice as a second vehicle

It sports a super-high wagon style, which is highlighted by its wide glass area, and a modest front style. And while the Racco fits firmly within the minicar framework, its tyres are positioned at each of its four corners, suggesting the low centre of gravity and stable driving unique to EVs.

While BYD has yet to release any specs of the vehicle, from information gathered from the event, what we know is that the Racco will be fitted with a lithium-ion iron phosphate battery and offer front-wheel drive. BYD has also said that the kei car's Japan launch is slated for Q3 2025.
