The winds of change have reached our shores. And they have brought more than just the recent cold temperatures.
Premiums for Cat A have risen above those for Cat B in this COE bidding exercise. This unusual result comes amidst successive declines in Cat B premiums since the start of 2026, even as those in Cat A have continued to hold steady.
A number of factors can be possibly attributed this latest phenomenon.
For starters, competition in Cat A has stiffened considerably over the last few years - but especially with the increasing might of relatively young electric brands, most of which have competitively-priced models that are eligible for a Cat A COE. Notably, a significant proportion of them includes even mid-sized models that have had their powertrains 'detuned' for a Cat A COE, including the BYD Sealion 7 Dynamic, the MGS6 EV, the Tesla Model Y RWD 110, and most recently, the XPENG G6 Air.
But it's also likely that the recently announced changes to the PARF rebates could have had the effect of discouraging those looking to purchase cars that incur a higher ARF from placing aggressive bids. Cars that incur a higher ARF penalty are more likely to not be eligible for registration here with a Cat A COE.
This is the first COE bidding exercise since the changes to the PARF rebates were announced.
