According to German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, the RX-8 will get several aerodynamic upgrades, new tail lights and a redesigned interior.
The rear wheel drive coupe will have a 231bhp rotary engine with a second knock sensor added to improve efficiency. Torque remains at 211Nm, while, in six-speed manual form, 0-100km/h comes about in 6.4 seconds, on to a top speed of 234km/h.
New front and rear spoilers, along with new side skirts, are the main cosmetic changes to the RX-8, bringing the car in line with the family look seen on the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6. Other changes include bigger tailpipes, LED lights in the tail lamps and new 19 inch alloys finished in dark grey.
Inside, there will be new black cloth and Recaro leather seats, along with a new instrument cluster, complementing the three-spoke steering wheel with red stitching. A nine-speaker Bose audio system and Bluetooth will also be included.
A limited slip differential, anti-lock brakes and stability & traction control are all expected to be standard.
The facelifted RX-8 is expected to be launched at this September's Frankfurt Motor Show, with sales commencing shortly after.
