Hyundai has inaugurated a new Joint Battery Research Centre with the Seoul National University. The collaborative effort between the Hyundai Group and Seoul National University aims to advance battery technologies and foster industry-academia cooperation to establish global leadership in battery development.
To achieve these aims, the new facility will secure a space for battery-only research that spans three floors and consist of seven laboratories, alongside supporting conference rooms. These spaces mark the first time a facility specialising in electric vehicle batteries has been built within Seoul National University.
A total of 22 joint research projects have already been scheduled for the research centre, to develop lithium metal batteries, solid-state batteries, battery management systems and battery process technology. In the realm of lithium metal batteries, Hyundai states that research will be conducted on high-durability lithium-electrolyte material element technology and minimising battery deterioration.
Researchers from Hyundai Motor and Kia will also be dispatched to the centre to participate as members of the joint research team to maximise research synergy through close communication and sharing of expertise.
