Coronation fever must be hitting the U.K.
Just a week after David Brown Automotive announced its Mini Remastered will be present at the coronation, Mattel has now announced that it will be building a 1:64 scale model of the Gold State Coach, available on a strictly made-to-order basis.
This new model has been recreated from hundreds of images as well as hours of footage of the actual coach utilised for royal celebrations The 230mm-long model is said to better capture the 261-year old, four-tonne coach better than ever. This model is designed from hundreds of images taken by Julian Payne, Senior Manager of Matchbox Product Design, alongside hours of footage of the most important royal celebrations in recent times.
The model also includes 'tampo printed' reins on the diecast horses, rolling wheels with a front turning axle, as well as windows - a first for a Matchbox Coronation Coach. Inside the detailed red interior, meanwhile, are metal figures of King Charles III and the Queen.
The designers of the coach have also corrected various elements of the original 1952 model. These include the tritons on the front of the coach, which are now accurately depicted as blowing horns, while the painted side panels are represented for the first time with additional printed decoration. Collectors searching for more detail will be pleased to find that the designers of Matchbox have, for the first time, incorporated three cherubs, representing England, Scotland and Ireland, on the roof.
The firm states that the London-based diecasting business Lesney sold over one million of its 118mm Coronation Coach, produced to mark Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne. Its sales success eventually enabled Lesney to fund the launch of the newly conceived Matchbox brand. You can purchase the model from Mattel's online site here.
