Mazda has revealed new details of its new, six-cylinder e-Skyactiv D diesel engine, set to join the plug-in hybrid drivetrain in the Mazda CX-60 SUV.
The new diesel unit is said to have been designed to meet the needs of customers looking for an efficient, long distance driving vehicle with great towing capacity.
The new diesel unit displaces 3.3-litres, and utilises an in-line six-cylinder configuration for its high inherent balance In order to achieve this, the e-Skyactiv D diesel engine displaces 3.3-litres, and sports an in-line six-cylinder configuration, for high inherent balance and a smooth and quiet engine note.
and utilises what Mazda terms as Distribution-Controlled Partially Premixed Compression Ignition technology, which the firm's states, makes the engine one of the cleanest diesel engines in the world, with a thermal efficiency of over 40%. This engine will also feature Mazda's 48V M Hybrid Boost system.
This engine will be offered with a choice of two power outputs in the CX-60: The first, in a 197bhp tune, will come with a rear-wheel drive transmission, while a second tune offering 251bhp will be mated to Mazda's i-Activ AWD all-wheel drive system.
The 251bhp version of the new engine will be paired with Mazda's i-Activ AWD all-wheel drive system in the CX-60 The 251bhp unit is said to bring the Mazda CX-60 from zero to 100km/h in just 7.4 seconds, while delivering a WLTP fuel economy of 22.6km/L, while the 197bhp variant will deliver a WLTP average fuel consumption of 24.5km/L.
The new engine is also said to come in at a similar weight compared against the Skyactiv D four-cylinder diesel engine currently available in the Mazda CX-5.
An in-line straight-six 3.0-litre e-Skyactiv petrol engine will also join this e-Skyactiv D and the e-Skyactiv plug-in hybrid drivetrain to complete the Mazda CX-60 powerplant lineup at a later date.
