Mercedes has unveiled its first AMG model of the new CLE Coupe.
This Mercedes-AMG CLE53 comes powered by a revised version of Mercedes-AMG's 3.0-litre M256 six-cylinder engine, which gets new piston rings, optimised fuel injection as well as a new exhaust gas turbocharger and an additional new electric compressor amongst other upgrades.
Total power from this unit now stands at 442bhp, while peak continuous torque now totals 560Nm, although the engine can also produce a total of 600Nm of torque for 12 seconds in overboost mode. Mercedes-AMG states that the new electric compressor also allows the engine to offer greater responsiveness.
This engine comes paired to a nine-speed transmission, as well as Mercedes-AMG's 4Matic all-wheel drive system, allowing the coupe to sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in 4.2 seconds. A three-stage AMG speed-sensitive steering and rear-axle steering comes as standard for the Mercedes-AMG CLE53. The car also gets steel springs, although Mercedes-AMG's Ride Control adaptive dampers come as standard.
On the exterior, the Mercedes-AMG CLE53 comes with an AMG-specific radiator grille, alongside a sportier front apron which allows for a larger air inlet. The car also differs from non-AMG models thanks to its flared front and rear fenders, which house wheels that get a 58mm wider track at the front, and 75mm at the rear). The Mercedes-AMG CLE53 also gets round double tailpipes at each end at the rear, while a most distinctive spoiler lip sits on the trunk lid.
In the cabin, the coupe continues to sport a free-standing 12.3-inch fully digital driver display and a 11.9-inch driver-oriented central display, although the former will feature an AMG-exclusive 'Supersport' mode that features a central round tachometer for a particularly sporty driving experience. Users will also be able to access a host of special displays via a dedicated AMG menu in the 11.9-inch central display.
The seats of the Mercedes-AMG CLE53 come upholstered in man-made leather and Microcut black microfibre which sport AMG-specific graphics and red topstitching. Nappa leather seats are also available as an option, and those that want more lateral support will also be able to opt for AMG performance seats.
