The Straits Times reported that SMRT has added six more halfway trips to bus service 190 on Friday nights, which will start from Somerset Station bus stop along Orchard Road, to ensure commuters can board during peak hours. It is also working with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to see if it can add more trips on weekday evenings between 9:30pm and 10:30pm.
The measures come shortly after a frustrated commuter uploaded a video online last week, claiming that she could not board bus service 190 after 13 tries on the night of 4th October. She told the local paper that she had waited for one hour and 40 minutes at the bus stop near Thong Teck building along Scotts Road. Her eight-minute video has since received close to 38,000 views and drawn 240 comments on YouTube.
LTA's investigation of the incident revealed that SMRT had operated only 33 bus trips instead of the 39 scheduled trips from 9:00pm to midnight due to a bus breakdown and traffic congestion at two stretches. This in turn led to a longer waiting time of up to 14 minutes and overcrowding that night, it noted. The frequency of bus service 190 after 7:00pm is typically about five to seven minutes.
The LTA added that a new trunk bus service, going from Bukit Panjang to Orchard Road, will be launched next month and this will provide commuters with more travel options as well as ease crowding on bus 190.
