Morgan Motor Company has shared the first details of its new, electric development vehicle already described as a forerunner to its future electric sports cars.
The vehicle is referred to as 'XP-1', is based on the Super 3's aluminium platform, and has been developed over the course of the last 12 months by Morgan’s team of engineers.
The vehicle's battery, motor, and inverter, meanwhile, are said to represent Morgan's first powertrain, and have been engineered to deliver the precise driving characteristics Morgan’s engineers want out of the vehicle.
Morgan states that the drivetrain is fast charging enabled, and will additionally offer bi-directional charging capability. The XP-1 is additionally the first ever Morgan to be fitted with an electronic parking brake.
The car also sports new aerodynamic modifications said to have resulted in a 33% reduction of drag coefficient, while in its cabin, a bespoke interior display allows for user interface experimentation.
Despite all these, Morgan additionally claims that the weight of the XP-1 remains comparable to that of the production car it is based on.
Morgan states that the prototype is not intended for production, but has been created to 'enhance thinking' in several areas including driving characterisation, powertrain development, in-house electric vehicle competence and training, as well as new feature ideation and testing. The XP-1 will continue on a comprehensive testing programme over the next few months to test new technologies and features from Morgan.
