The phased replacement of the trains that currently ply the North-South (NSL) and East-West (EWL) MRT lines is about to begin as the first pair of new trains have arrived in Singapore.
The first of a total of 106 new six-car trains supplied by Bombardier Transportation, which was acquired French manufacturer Alstom in 2021, are designed in Germany and manufactured in China. The LTA states the new trains will enter service late 2022, following various test and commissioning works.
The trains, the LTA added, also come with commuter-friendly features such as refreshed LCD screens for clearer display of train travel information, and an integrated suite of condition monitoring features to aid pre-emptive maintenance.
They feature a livery of green and red stripes - the colours most associated with the EWL and NSL respectively.
According to The Straits Times, Alstorm also previously stated that the trains will have more open spaces for wheelchairs and strollers.
A total of three generations of trains currently ply the EWL and NSL routes, with the first generation Kawasaki trains having operated here since the two MRT lines opened in 1987. The older trains on the two routes will be progressively withdrawn from passenger service and decomissioned as the new trains arrive.
