Just as a cat prepares to pounce, so is Peugeot stretching to claw up a role in an electric future. The firm has reserved its first major announcement of the year to reveal its plans for 2024 and beyond, and they are rather ambitious.
To start, Peugeot has confirmed that it will be expanding its range of all-electric vehicles with a new e-408 and e-5008 in 2024. These two models will bring the firm's all-electric offerings to a total of nine passenger vehicles and three commercial vehicles, a range which it states, is the largest amongst any European mainstream automotive manufacturer.
And to instil confidence in its products, the firm has also launched a new 'Peugeot Allure Care' programme which is said to guarantee peace of mind for customers of the new e-3008 by covering the electric motor, charger, powertrain, and the main electrical and mechanical components of the car for up to eight years or the its first 160,000km. This new programme comes in addition to the specific warranty offered by Peugeot on all its electric vehicle batteries, which also lasts eight years or for the first 160,000km of the vehicle.
On the technology front, Peugeot has announced that it plans to roll out ChatGPT technology into its entire range of passenger and commercial vehicles by the second half of 2024 (although five pilot markets will receive the tech before this). The AI powered chatbot will come integrated into the firm's i-Cockpit infotainment system through the OK Peugeot voice assistant, allowing it to answer queries and requests on any subject.
To raise its sustainability profile, Peugeot also plans to contribute to the Stellantis Group's efforts to develop a circular economy business. To this end, the firm plans to not only use fewer materials, but to involve more sustainable materials, and to increase their longevity and ensure that they get recycled at the end of their life.
It states that the Peugeot e-3008 is already made up of 23% recycled materials, including its steels and polymers. Stellantis has already created Sustainera Valorauto via a joint venture with Galloo, a recycling leader in Europe, to offer vehicle recovery, refurbishment, and marketing of viable parts, as well as the recycling of materials. It is further working with Orano, a global recycling leader, to recycle car batteries via an innovative low-carbon process that allows for a significant recovery rate of material.
Finally, Peugeot has announced that it is expanding its commitment to education with a new partnership with U.K. charity Born Free, which works to protect wild species and wild places by engaging, educating and empowering local communities to co-exist with wild animals in Kenya and other countries around the world.
The firm has already made available a host of examples of its Boxer commercial vehicles to the French scientific and educational association Under the Pole to facilitate the transport of the association's equipment during expeditions, as well as to support its educational caravan across France for its ocean awareness actions with the general public and in schools.
