The local police have recorded the fingerprints of staff working in the early hours at Bishan depot on the 5th of May - where a train was found vandalised just before it entered fare service. According to The Straits Times, investigators are looking at all possibilities for the act of vandalism - including an inside job carried out by SMRT's staff or contractors.
The police have also not ruled out the possibility of involvement by external parties - although there is no sign of trespass. The local paper also added investigators are reviewing the footage of all video cameras in the vicinity of the vandalised train.
The latest incident is the third such case SMRT has encountered in four years. However, the English daily believes the recent work of vandalism appears disorganised.
The first case was reported back in May 2010, when two vandals cut through the fence of SMRT's Changi depot and spray painted graffiti on one side of a train. For his act, Swiss national Oliver Fricker, was sentenced to seven months' imprisonment and three strokes of the cane. His accomplice, British national Lloyd Dane Alexander, is yet to be caught.
In the second case, which occurred in August 2011, a hole was cut in the fence at the Bishan depot, and the words 'Jet Setter's' were spray painted on one of the trains.
Vandalism carries a maximum punishment of a three-year jail term or a fine of up to $2,000 in addition to three to eight strokes of the cane.
