Sick of waiting at red lights? Audi's TLI system may be the solution

Audi's Traffic Light Information (TLI) technology, which allows the German automaker's models to receive data from traffic signals ahead, is about to receive a major upgrade. Audi customers in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco can look forward to the technology coming their way, with other locations soon to be announced.

TLI provides drivers with an optimum travelling speed, helping the driver ride a 'green wave' free of waiting at red traffic lights. Beyond time savings, studies conducted by Audi and the U.S.A's Department of Transportation have found that minimising stop-and-go driving increases fuel economy by 15%.

In addition, TLI technology pre-empts drivers waiting at red traffic lights with a countdown, helping them sharpen awareness prior to the signal turning green.

TLI works through an LTE signal that comes with an Audi connect PRIME or PLUS subscription. Traffic signals are relayed to servers, which collect data and recognise patterns that make predictions about traffic conditions ahead.
