Our nation's public transport network is set to get a host of additions going into and beyond 2024.
For those in the east, the LTA has announced that Stage 4 of the Thomson-East Coast Line will commence operations from 23 June 2024. Spanning a total of 10.8km and seven stations (Tanjong Rhu, Katong Park, Tanjong Katong, Marine Parade, Marine Terrace, Siglap and Bayshore), the new section of the line is expected to allow commuters to cut their commute times by up to 50% - commuters from Marine Parade travelling to Shenton Way will now take just 20 minutes to finish their journey, as opposed to the 40 minutes required by taking both the bus and train without the new section of the MRT line.
The LTA states that the stations of the new section of the Thomson-East Coast Line will place a total of 235,000 households within a 10-minute walk from an existing Thomson-East Coast Line station.
Those who will be utilising the line to commute to work will also want to note that commuters will be offered free travel between the seven stations during an opening event happening on 21 June 2024, from 10:00am to 9:00pm. The LTA states that a series of activities are being planned to mark the opening of the stations, although more information on this lineup will only be made available on LTA's social media pages in the following weeks.
For those who don't find themselves within walking distance of these seven stations, there's no need to fret.
The LTA has also announced that Stage 5 of the Thomson-East Coast Line (comprising the stations Bedok South, Sungei Bedok interchange and Xilin) will also open in 2026. The East Coast Integrated Depot, which has connecting tunnels to both TEL and DTL as well as viaducts from the East-West Line, will also open in 2026.
For those residing in the Northeast, the LTA has also announced that works on the Punggol Coast station on the North East Line extension are progressing well, and the station is on track to open by the end of 2024.
Works are also commencing from March 2024 to enhance the platforms of Sengkang LRT station. These improvements are aimed at improving commuter flow, with dedicated stopping locations for each of the four routes plying the station. The station will get new signs and queue markings, as well as a new tactile guiding system to facilitate boarding and alighting.
The LTA also expects the first of a total of 25 new two-car trains for the Sengkang-Punggol LRT network to arrive by the end of 2024.
And for those in the west, there's also good news: The Bukit Panjang LRT will resume dual loop operations on Saturdays at selected hours (from 11:00am to 1:00pm and 5:00pm to 7:00pm) as renewal works on the line continue. The network has been operating on a one loop service since 1 December 2019 to facilitate renewal works.
The LTA states that it will monitor the performance of the network before deciding on further extensions of the dual loop operations to more off-peak hours. Dual loop operations on the network will continue to run during peak hours on weekday mornings and evenings.
The network has additionally received two new trains which will begin passenger service in the third quarter of 2024. To facilitate testing of the new trains and a new signalling system along the network, services on it will end one hour earlier at 10:30pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from 22 March 2024 to 30 June 2024.
Finally, the LTA has announced the construction of Hume Station (part of the Downtown line) is progressing well and the station is on track to open in 2025.
