Subaru of America, Inc. has announced that its 2020 vehicle lineup in the U.S.A now offers four Top Safety Pick+ and five Top Safety Pick awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Subaru's total awards increased from eight to nine for 2020, with the firm earning four out of the 23 Top Safety Pick+ awards given across the industry.
The models awarded the Top Safety Pick+ award include the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, the Subaru Forester, the Subaru Legacy, and the Subaru Outback.
Meanwhile, the Subaru Ascent, Subaru Crosstrek (known as the XV EyeSight here in Singapore but with Lane Departure and Sway Warning with Lane Keep Assist), and the Subaru WRX were awarded the Top Safety Pick by the IIHS.
For the first time, the IIHS criteria for both awards now require that vehicles achieve a 'Good' rating for the passenger-side small overlap front collision. The small overlap tests are designed to replicate what happens when just the front corner of the vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole.
All of Subaru's IIHS award winners in the U.S.A for 2020 have the EyeSight Driver Assist Technology that includes automatic emergency braking.
For 2020, IIHS has also incorporated pedestrian crash prevention ratings into its Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards. Subaru and other automakers have made a voluntary commitment to make automatic emergency braking standard on virtually all their models by 2022.
This voluntary commitment calls only for systems that help avoid crashes with other vehicles, but Subaru is among some that have also committed to include vehicle-to-pedestrian safety functionality.
