Alpine has revealed the A290_(beta) concept car.
As the name suggests, the car is a late development concept, which Alpine states will already mirror a future production car - a performance-oriented variant of the Renault 5 - closely, although the interior of this A290_(beta) is still much more conceptual.
And conceptual it is indeed. Here, a three-seat layout is employed, which places the driver centrally at the front for greater connection with the road and a more focused driving experience, while passengers (or co-pilots as Alpine describes them) will be offered an unparalleled experience.
The rest of the cabin of the Alpine A290_(beta) has also been designed around the centrally positioned driver. Here, an arrow-shaped dashboard features, complete with ambient light strips that double up as indicators so there is no need for matching flashing lights inside.
The car also makes do without any display screens, and all necessary driving information is instead displayed through the head-up display, although a driver's headset will offer up additional race-related information. The steering wheel here is also said to be derived from Alpine's various motorsport single seaters such as the Formula One A523.
More intriguing, perhaps, is the exterior design of this Alpine A290_(beta) concept. The show car comes in at 4,050mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,480mm high, dimensions which, if carried over to the production vehicle, will mean it will be similar in size (although a little wider) to the Volkswagen Polo.
Here, Alpine states that the two X-shaped sets of lights at the front and the three-colour aluminium wheels both foreshadow those set to feature on the production model. The rear lights one the concept car are vertical, like the ones on the A470 endurance racing car.
The concept car also comes in a finish inspired by the mountain range for which the brand gets its name. The upper sections of the car gets a crystal-like powdery white, designed to mimic freshly mountain snow, while its lower sections, including the sills, front spoiler and lower valance accents, are rock-like, thanks to their forged carbon material.
The Alpine A290_(beta) gets an all new multi-link rear axle alongside torque vectoring technology and a high-performance Brembo braking system, although these have not been confirmed for the production car.
