Dominique Egner, a 16-year old German European School student, was one of two to win a year-long karting scholarship - worth $11,850 - after claiming pole under the 15-17 age category at the Rev Up Singapore! Karting Championships yesterday.
According to The Sunday Times, each sponsorship consists of a Singapore Motor Sports Association (SMSA) karting licence, full race gear, practice sessions and entry to KF1 - the top level of karting for drivers aged 15 and above - official races in Singapore next year. The final two races held yesterday featured 24 contenders, narrowed down from an initial 120.
Starting the race in sixth place at the 720m-long Marina Bay Street Circuit, Egner took the lead early on when he took a gamble at the first turn. "At turn one, everyone was taking a wide turn so I took a brave pill, turned on the inside and got ahead of the pack," he told the tabloid.
Muhammad Ridhwan Abu Bakar, a 21-year old Nanyang Polytechnic sports and wellness student was the second winner of the karting scholarship after claiming victory under the 18-21 category - with a little aid from good fortune. "Someone spun out in the first turn so I managed to get ahead and from there it was about making sure I stayed in the lead," cited Ridhwan.
Second Minister for Trade and Industry S. Iswaran was the Guest of Honour at the event and lauded the championship, which was part of the Rev Up Singapore! Campaign aimed at getting the local community involved with next month's Formula One race through support activities like educational talks at schools and behind-the-scenes tours of the race compound.
