New Golf GTI Edition 50 impresses on the Nordschleife track

A few days ago, Volkswagen announced that a special anniversary model to commemorate 50 years of the GTI will be unveiled on 20 June 2025 at the 24-hour race at the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Despite not being revealed to the public yet, the Golf GTI Edition 50 has already set a record: It is now the fastest Volkswagen series production model on the Nordschleife track with a lap time of 7:46.13 minutes.

Driver Benny Leuchter, who set the record timing with a near-production test vehicle, sang praises of the front-wheel drive Golf GTI Edition 50 on the track, additionally adding that, "in technical terms the car was the same as the version that will be sold in the future".

The Golf GTI Edition 50 will be available with an optional Performance package, which includes a performance chassis and lightweight 19-inch Potenza Race tyres specially developed for the car, which are in turn mounted on lightweight forged wheels, reducing the car's unsprung and rotating masses.
