Whether it's made in France (where the Yaris was actually manufactured) or in Thailand, quality will remain a key Toyota Yaris attribute. In fact, Toyota Motor Manufacturing France's close involvement with suppliers from the very earliest stages of production will ensure that every component contributes to the overall quality of the vehicle.
The third generation Toyota Yaris inherits all the clever packaging DNA of its previous generations, while the exterior showcases the greater appeal of a bolder, more dynamic and elegant design execution befitting a European compact car – a contributing factor that puts an edge over the Peugeot 208 and Nissan Note.
More impressively, the Yaris is perky on the go. The 1.3-litre VVT-i petrol powerplant residing underneath its humble bonnet is designed to maximise performance and driving enjoyment while minimising fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Mated to Toyota's latest Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the Yaris generates 98 horses at 6,000rpm and, via a smoothened torque curve, a maximum 125Nm at 4,000rpm. |
|
Although the claimed fuel consumption figures of the Toyota Yaris is 20km/L, we still managed a frugal 14km/L with a heavy right foot.
Also contributing to its win is the more driver-focused cockpit with a symmetrical layout. The driver's and front passenger's spaces are clearly divided, emphasising a new focus on the driver ergonomics. Needless to say, perceptions of sensory quality are further enhanced through highly tactile, premium quality detailing. These, again, superseded our expectations of a compact hatchback, earning it the segment winner for 2013.

The legendary Volkswagen Golf builds on the success of its predecessors, of which over 29 million have been sold, bringing new levels of comfort, practicality, safety and efficiency to its class.
But that's not why the seventh generation Golf bagged this award. Impressively, Despite offering more room for passengers and more advanced technological features than ever before, new production techniques contribute to the German hatchback being up to 100kg lighter than the car it replaces, helping to make it up to 23 percent more efficient than before. On top of this, the new Golf is also safer than ever, thanks to a stronger body structure and the standard and optional safety systems.
Inside, there is more room than ever, thanks to tweaks and enhancements to benefit all occupants. There is also more room for luggage. The boot is 30 litres larger, at 380 litres, with a low 685mm sill to make loading effortless. |
|
In the cockpit, the centre console is now angled more towards the driver, giving them easier, more ergonomic and direct access to auxiliary controls, including the new generation of touchscreen infotainment systems that is available on the Volkswagen Golf. All Golf models now have touchscreen systems as standard, which has a sensor to display a set of options as you move your hands towards it.
Regardless of the variants tested, which are either the 1.4-litre Golf Sport or the 1.4-litre Golf, the car is the epitome of perfection on the move. It's so quiet and refined on the go that you'll have to constantly steal a glance at the speedo just to make sure you aren't breaking the law.
Over humps and broken tarmac surfaces, the Golf outdoes the Toyota Auris and Hyundai i30 with its comfortable ride. It soaks up all the roughness with grace and is easily more comfortable than many of its rivals in its class. While all these factors make the Volkswagen Golf a very complete car, the deciding element for this car to be the winner of this segment is the fact that it's desirable. |

The letters 'GTI' have stood for superior dynamic performance for over three decades now. In the tradition of previous models by the same name, Volkswagen has introduced the latest version of the Volkswagen Golf GTI at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.
Under the new MQB Platform, the Mk7 GTI is slightly larger than the Mk6 while managing to be approximately 100kg lighter. This, coupled with the impressive 220bhp and 350Nm of torque from the 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, will see to the hot hatch finishing the century sprint in a rapid 6.5 seconds.
While the performance figures of the GTI are almost similar to the Ford Focus ST and the Opel OPC, it edges over both these cars by having an impressive fuel economy of 15.1km/L. This immediately translates to the fact that you can truly enjoy the car without worrying about constantly visiting the pumps. |
|
Plus, the GTI is also equipped with a driving profile selector. For the first time, you can now select from five different driving modes in a GTI - Eco, Comfort, Normal, Sport and Individual – providing drivers the freedom to choose the driving setting that best suits their mood.
Like all six Golf GTI generations before it, the seventh generation is distinguished from other Golf models by numerous additional equipment features and classic GTI insignia. On the inside, the Golf GTI makes a sporty impression with its leather-wrapped bottom-shaved steering wheel while the standard ambient lighting illuminates the cabin with a cosy effect. |

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class sets new standards in the premium compact segment with its newly-developed four-cylinder engines, fuel efficiency and head-turning sheet metal.
Comparing to its competitors – the Audi A3 Sportback and the BMW 1 Series Hatchback – the Mercedes-Benz A-Class may lose out in terms of its weight. But it doesn't, however, lose out in terms of its fun-to-drive character. The fact that it comes out tops with its performance figure of 154 horses contributes to this win too.
More relevantly, power delivery from the Mercedes-Benz A-Class is linear and seamless. Plus, it's around curves where the car really shines, giving you ample confidence with a well-behaved and poised character.
Impressively, the cabin of the A-Class combines a sporty ambience with ergonomic styling and layout – the best among the three German cars. |
|
When it comes to safety, this hatchback does not disappoint. Ample safety systems such as the Adaptive Brake System and Collision Warning System are available in the car as standard. The more relevant one is of course the latter, which can detect gaps that are too small between the vehicle and objects in front driving at speeds of over 30km/h. If the system detects the danger of a rear-end collision and a possible impact, the driver can be warned visually and audibly.
Being a premium brand, the exterior of the A-Class blends emotive appeal with individualistic character and strikes a completely new note in the compact vehicle segment. The pronounced arrow-shaped front section and expressive radiator grille give this hatch both an air of self-confidence and a decidedly energetic look.
Now how often can you say that about a German hatchback? |

Toyota's compact sedan has enjoyed success in the local market thanks to its genuine practicality and reliability as a daily runabout. The latest generation proves to be the more driver-centric than before, with the driver's instrument console shifted from the centre to the flank to provide a more 'cockpit-like' feel.
All set to extend the success of the moniker, the new Vios is a smarter package than before. It adopts clever aerodynamics to cut through the air more easily for a smoother and more efficient drive. To do this, the body work sports additional features, such as a lightweight Catamaran roof design to help evoke air flow from the front to rear. |
|
The Vios also scores in terms of refinement and comfort. The interior receives a boost in insulation – clocking a significant improve for its Noise & Vibration performance – through its dashboard, carpet, and engine silencers. A unique three-layer glass also helps to insulate the cabin against external noise and make the cabin a quieter place to be in.
Last but not least, the Vios is blessed with the efficiency – a trait synonymous with the Toyota brand name. The 1.5-litre powerplant is perky, yet frugal – claiming a very respectable fuel economy figure of 6.5L/100km. In addition, the clean and efficient engine also garners a $5,000 rebate under the CEVS scheme - adding on to its already sensible outfit to edge out in competition. |

It is no surprise that the Kia K3 has triumphed competition in its segment. The Korean sedan charms with its ingenious design, and more so with its full array of features which have made it a segment leader.
Having sold more than 6,000 units locally since it first set foot on our shores, the family sedan is undoubtedly one of the hot favourites in its segment. Its latest instalment – the third generation of Kia's 1.6-litre sedan – aims to build on its success with more 'substance'.
On the exterior, the K3 embraces modernity with its LED daytime running lights. The K3 has also grown in dimensions, now longer, lower and wider than its predecessor, to portray a more sporting and greater on-road presence. An extended wheelbase also meant that the interior of the K3 is now more spacious than before – a further boost in its overall appeal. |
|
Besides its sheet metal, the interior gets a generous dose of equipments. Features like keyless entry and start, electronic auto folding mirrors, Bluetooth hands-free, paddle shifters and ventilated seats with power adjustment and memory function have also found their way to the latest K3. What is more notable is that some of these features are not even found in larger cars, more so those in its own segment, which makes the K3 stand out in its competition.
The K3's drivetrain receives a thorough makeover too. The 1.6-litre Gamma engine pushes out 130bhp and 157Nm of torque now – a 4.8 percent increase in power. Mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox, the K3 is also able to deliver a modest fuel consumption of just 6.8L/100km. And with a CO2 emission level of 160g/km, the K3 will garner a $5,000 savings under the CEVS scheme – which further enhances its bang-for-buck preposition. |

Honda's family sedan has been a mainstay in the segment for as long as we remembered. Boasting a strong sense of identity, the latest Accord is reminisce of its heydays, yet at the same time, keeping up with the times with a comprehensive array of gadgets and technologies.
One of the Accord's best traits has to be its sporty stance, which is synonymous with Honda cars. Blending form with function, the sedan now has a quartet of full LED headlamps, which adds modernity to its looks. An innovative blind spot camera also found its way into the Accord - one of the first in its class to have such a feature. |
|
Cabin design has always been one of the strengths of Honda, and the Accord is no exception. Graceful curves outline the instrument console to give off a stylish and classy feel. For enhanced ergonomics, a double-deck screen now takes centre stage, and is both a pleasure to look and work with. All these constitute to a cabin that is one of the best-looking and easiest to use in its segment.

The latest GS embodies not just the essence of Lexus, but also a new aspect that was never quite seen in previous Lexus cars – sportiness. Bearing a more curvaceous and dynamic-looking outfit, the GS now stands in a better light in the face of competition.
A more striking and distinctive appearance is also now possible with the F Sport treatment, adding aggression and allowing the GS to stand out from the crowd.
To match its handsome sheet metal, the GS is now more dynamically honed than before. Various driving modes are also available to match the car's character to the driver's mood, offering the flexibility between comfort-biased or a tauter setup for keener handling when the occasion calls for it. With all these at a touch of the button, few other cars are able to encompass such different characters in one single body.
|
|
And, of course, by bearing the Lexus badge the GS still boast genuine luxury within its cabin. The high standard of material used throughout the cabin stands as proof of the GS' aspirations and motives.
The marque's attention to the tiniest detail is also evident in the interior, where every lid or opening operates with such demeanour that is unseen in other cars in its class. And it is this ensemble of good looks, a well-appointed cabin, and the flexibility of different driving characters that make the GS a winner in its class. |

The CLA's unprecedented four-door coupe styling helps it to turn heads everywhere it goes, and is easily one of the most attractive models in the market right now, which gives it an edge over its close competitors.
But the CLA isn't all about the pretty face and handsome sheet metal. A true testament to merging form with function, its sleek profile achieves a drag coefficient of just 0.23 – not only the lowest in the segment but it is also the sleekest of all mass production cars. That means the CLA can cut through wind with lesser resistance, and hence helps to achieve better fuel efficiency for the car. |
|
Being the only model to be fitted with a dual-clutch gearbox, there are no qualms about the CLA's ability to cruise with cream-like smoothness. The tight and taut chassis also blesses it with keen handling characteristics and, coupled with the concise steering, it's one of the better handling cars among the lot. This helps to translate normal daily drive into an inspiring and engaging one.
As a badge-bearer of the three-pointed star, the CLA also gets a slew of innovative technological features, such as DISTRONIC PLUS active cruise control and Active Parking Assist. As a whole, the CLA could not have been more complete – capable of stealing the glances, and at the same time retaining its practicality and charming the man behind the wheel. |
|
|
The CLS-Class Shooting Brake is undoubtedly in a class of its own. It showcases a blend of form with function, with a body type that is elegant, graceful and unprecedented, and yet surpassing standards with its luxurious interior and great practicality.
On the outside, the Shooting Brake's long bonnet and low sweeping roof add to the dramatic silhouette that mimics that of a sports coupe. Till present, few other models are able to put off such dainty lines that are matched with an equally strong and dynamic stance on the road.
Practicality is one of the Shooting Brake's best traits. The car also has enough space for five to travel in comfort, as well as a sizeable boot – thanks to an extended rump. Bearing the three-pointed star moniker, one can be assured of an equally appealing cabin as with its charming exterior. |
|
Premium materials are used to construct the Shooting Brake's quarters, such as Nappa leather on the steering wheel, and contrasting aluminium-look trims, which give off a modernistic yet cosy feel.
Equipped with a range of potent drivetrain from Mercedes-Benz, the Shooting Brake can emerge and leap from traffic with ease – all these without disrupting the serenity within the cabin.
A Grand Tourer that allows its passengers to travel in both style and comfort - the CLS Shooting Brake has achieved a tall order that is previously thought impossible. |

The Mazda CX-5 is a whole new way of seeing the compact SUV. Sculpted, commanding and dynamic, it certainly hasn't been shaped by compromise. This new generation vehicle is the first to display the new Mazda design inspiration known as 'KODO: Soul of Motion'. KODO's powerful, athletic cues capture the muscular beauty of an animal springing into motion.
Although the CX-5 may lose out a little bit to its competitors in cargo capacity, the large boot can still swallow four golf bags with ease. And thanks to a 2,700mm wheelbase, which is the longest in its class, passengers in the CX-5 can enjoy more space than its fellow opponents.
Mated to a fuss-free six-speeder, the CX-5 is powered by a 2.0-litre engine with SKYACTIV technology producing 155bhp and 200Nm of torque. As such, the compact SUV gets to the century mark in 9.5 seconds - 1.2 seconds faster than the Toyota RAV4 and 2.3 seconds faster than the Subaru Forester. |
|
New generation SKYACTIV technology represent a fundamental rethink of the internal combustion engine, releasing more performance for less fuel, allowing the CX-5 to achieve a fuel consumption figure of 14.5km/L, the best among its segment.
What's more, potential buyers of the car also have the choice of the diesel variant, equipped with a 2.2-litre diesel engine producing 173bhp and 420Nm of torque, which is also more fuel efficient (16.9km/L) and emits less carbon.
Plus, elegant lines, graceful details and a well-planted footprint make the latest CX-5 an impressive all rounder, allowing it to be able to stand apart from the rest and to truly deserve the top spot in the compact SUV segment. |

Every company in the luxury business has recently developed midsize crossovers with plenty of comfort and convenience features. But let's not forget that crossovers are meant to deliver utility as well, and it's this consideration that makes the 2013 Volvo XC60 a top choice for families.
For the 2014 model year, the XC60 underwent an extensive makeover. On the exterior, the SUV gets a more urban twist. The redesigned front features a new hood shape that emphasises the wide, confident look.
Inside, you'll find new instruments, added metallic accents and white, rather than green, button illumination. These aren't huge stylistic changes, but they certainly add to an already classy look that's still highlighted by the dashboard's elegantly curved centre console inspired by fine Swedish design.
Other XC60 virtues include roomy seating, family-focused features and top notch crash scores. With regards to the latter, the XC60 is one of the few vehicles to earn a perfect five stars in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)'s crash test as well as a 'Good' score in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)'s new small-overlap frontal-offset test. |
|
Of course, avoiding a collision in the first place would be even better, and with that in mind the Volvo XC60 has plenty of features designed to prevent crashes. Among them is the standard 'City Safety', which can automatically stop the XC60 if a low speed collision with another vehicle or fixed object is deemed imminent. Debuting this year is an upgraded system that senses wayward pedestrians or cyclists. The latter is part of a package that also includes driver-attention and lane-departure warning systems.
As for the competitors, the well-rounded Ford Kuga comes closest to matching the XC60's family friendliness, while being a tad more luxurious as well. On the other hand, the Land Rover Freelander 2 boasts unrivalled build quality, added refinement and a similar emphasis on safety. These are great choices all, but when it comes to providing family-friendly transport in a stylish, luxurious package, it's hard to beat the Volvo XC60. |

Even when viewed from a distance, the BMW X6 M50d stands out from its competitors. The black BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line and specially developed styling of the double-spoke 20-inch light-alloy wheels gives an even more prominent presence. The large specific air inlets in the wide front air dam not only add a sporty appearance, but also provide an enhanced cooling function for the drive system and the brakes.
Outstanding features at the powerful rear include the prominent 'X6 M50d' model designation and the special tailpipe surrounds in high-gloss black, which further emphasise the dynamic presence among the other performance SUVs.
The symbiosis between sportiness and elegance ensures an exclusive interior ambience for the BMW X6 M50d. As soon as you've opened the driver's door, the 'M50d' lettering on the door sill finishers catches your eye immediately. This feature underlines the exclusiveness of the BMW M GmbH, which is reflected by the high-quality materials in the interior and by the sheer joy experienced by the driver. |
|
The BMW X6 M50d also comes with an abundance of power - 381bhp - and a whopping 740Nm of torque, which is more than the Range Rover Sport and the Grand Cherokee SRT8. More impressively, the BMW X6 M50d's engine is the first to feature a tri-turbo setup to maximise the power across the power band.
And in just 5.3 seconds, it hits the 100km/h target. For superior handling, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system, Dynamic Performance Control and an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission are there to assist, giving it an edge over its peers.
With a fuel consumption figure of 12.3km/L, the BMW X6 M50d is also the most fuel efficient among its competitors. Packed with it all, there's no doubt that the BMW X6 M50d is the most powerful diesel beauty of the year. |

Ever since the last seven-seater Hyundai made its appearance in Singapore in 2009 – the second generation Santa Fe – there has been no new Hyundai seven-seater flag-bearer here.
Just for the all new Santa Fe, Hyundai developed the new model's own design concept called 'Storm Edge', with its exterior invoking impressions of irrepressible motion and capturing dynamic images created by nature during a storm.
The new Santa Fe has been designed to impress admirers who care about looks and leisure that combine to make a car really complete in today's context of advancements.
From the A-pillars to the smooth front-view moulding, the look is robust and stylish.
Compared to the Kia Sorento and the Mazda CX-9, the sleek design of the Santa Fe, combined with Hyundai's expertise in interior engineering, delivers a great presence on the road, while improving functionality and convenience. |
|
Powered by a more powerful 2.4-litre GDi engine that delivers 192bhp and 242Nm of torque, coupled with the fact that the new Santa Fe is lighter than it used to be, the car is easier to lug around than the Mazda CX-9.
More notably, unlike its peers in this competition, the Santa Fe is a versatile four-wheel drive carrier capable of tackling off-road terrain, making it an urban yet country traveller for the large family. And when it comes to road undulations, the Santa Fe is well set up for a more comfortable ride, easily absorbing bumps and smoothening out most rough road surfaces.
Indeed, the new Santa Fe is a culmination of build quality, exacting performance and clever equipment that gives it an edge over others in its seven-seater class. |

Whether open or closed, the E-Class Cabriolet turns heads wherever it goes. The expressive front section of the E-Class Cabriolet with large air intakes and ribs in the bumper is a brand new interpretation of the characteristic 'four-eyed' face of the vehicle. This cabriolet is unique in a way that its elegant open-top silhouette and the exclusive appearance of the exterior give it an air of luxury, sportiness and sexiness.
The exterior design continues seamlessly in the interior of the E-Class Cabriolet. Sportiness emanates from the cockpit with air outlets in silver shadow and the new three-dial instrument cluster.
The E-Class Cabriolet is a classic example of how innovative technology makes every journey into an experience. Many useful systems are employed in the interior such as automatic seat belt feeders that help to increase convenience and lend a personal touch – a feature not seen in its competitors. |
|
Compared to its peers, the E-Class Cabriolet stands out in terms of space. In terms of dimensions, it is larger than the Golf GTI Cabriolet and the Cooper S Roadster. As such, even though it's a cabriolet, passengers can still bask in comfort.
Moreover, the 7G-Tronic Plus transmission, with an additional gear as compared to the six-speeders on its competitors, help to enhance fuel efficiency – allowing the car to achieve some 14.7km/L.
The E-Class Cabriolet also provides more flexibility in terms of opening and closing its top, capable of doing so at speeds of up to 40km/h, compared to the Golf GTI Cabriolet at 30km/h and the Cooper S Roadster, which requires some manual labour.
Setting new standards in its segment, the E-Class Cabriolet is a compelling proposition. The sexy exterior design, technological advanced interior and a sense of space that few other cabriolets can offer make it worthy of the Convertible of the Year. |

Whether it is known as a design classic, a powerful mid-engined sports car or a pure-bred roadster, the Porsche Boxster does full justice to its famous predecessors, such as the 356 No.1 or the 550 Spyder.
Precise lines running elegantly across the wings to the rear make the Boxster unique among Porsche models as well as its competitors. The interior of the car delivers exactly what the exterior promises. Light, uncluttered and defined, everything is conceived with one goal in mind - the perfect drive.
The Boxster is equipped with a 2.7-litre flat-six engine producing 265bhp and 280Nm of torque. With the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), the Boxster completes the 0 to 100km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds. In conjunction with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the sprint time is reduced to just 5.5 seconds. |
|
With the Boxer engine, the Boxster stands out from its competitors, thanks to the unique mid-mounting trademark and the advantages speak for themselves. The concentration of mass close to the centre of the vehicle and the low centre of gravity produce extraordinary agility and cornering dynamics unlike any of its competitors.
At the same time, weight is uniformly distributed between the front and rear axles and handling characteristics are particularly well balanced. The combined result enables the driver to fully enjoy the experience and maintain excellent control over the car.
Although the Boxster may not be as loud as the F-Type, one of the best and unique aspects of the Boxster driving experience is how man and machine can connect as one. |

There is no other way to explain the Citroen DS5 but with expressions like, different, well-grounded, sleek, futuristic and if we may add - metrosexual.
Still unlike other cars in the category, the DS5 is primarily a people carrier, albeit overdosed with the world of fashion, haute couture and aviation attached to it.
The Citroen DS5 is one of the very few cars available, which is photogenic too. It is near impossible to make this car unfavourable in pictures - regardless of the angle the picture is captured.
The car's gaze is highlighted by a LED light signature, and complements the flashy chrome-finished sabre and rear wing design. No doubt it is elegant, but every crease, nut and bolt is dipped in the jar of fashion and avantgarde quality.
While its competitors in this competition are good-looking in more ways than one, the Citroen DS5 isn't shy and displays its bold personality in every detail, including the double tail pipes that are integrated in the rear bumper. |
|
The aviation inspiration spills to the cabin too, together with a hint of the world of Victoria Beckham. Like the exterior, every bit and piece is flashy, vibrant and bold – but all in the right amount. It leans towards classiness and flamboyance more than vulgar and rude.
Like an aircraft, the overhead centre console showcases buttons and toggle switches while the lower centre console house core technology controls switches like window controls, central locking system, electric child lock, etc.
Every detail has been given great thought to immerse you into a universe of sophistication. Haute couture sophistication and artistry is also evident in the watchstrap inspired seat design. Inside and out, every detail - regardless how miniscule - has been refined.
The Citroen DS5 is akin to the 747, Concorde or the SR-71 Blackbird - they serve their purpose in the world of aviation - but gracefully. Having said much, it is no surprise the DS5 is beautiful, it is French after all. Merveilleux! |

The distinctive form of the iconic double-round headlights on the BMW 7 Series follows intelligent function. The accent line with indicator function cuts into the top of characteristic light rings – thus redefining the expression of the entire front section of the car.
Full-LED headlights in the BMW 7 Series provide a further safety boost when driving at night - illuminating the road ahead with an exceptional intensity and rich contrast, while the cones of the Adaptive Headlights dynamically follow every turn on the road.
The anti-dazzle High-Beam Assistant in conjunction with full-LED headlights ensures that the driver can enjoy optimal visibility at all times without having to switch manually between high and low beam. |
|
An integrated camera in the rear view mirror aids in identifying vehicles travelling up to 400 metres in front while oncoming traffic is picked up a kilometre away. A mechanism inside the headlights then allows the High-Beam Assistant to intelligently mask the headlights - as and when required - in order to eliminate the danger of dazzling vehicles as they draw closer. When necessary, the High-Beam Assistant can also adapt by switching to low beam on one or both sides.
The BMW 7 Series' High-Beam Assistant and Adaptive Headlights, together with the variable headlight distribution continue to represent the ultimate in lighting technology, and in its own right, is truly a technological marvel. |

It was a tough fight this year. We have the beautiful Aston Martin Vanquish Volante, the brutal Lamborghini Aventador Roadster, the new McLaren 12C Spider and the slightly more practical Ferrari – and the fastest one to date – the F12berlinetta.
All of the nominees are exceptionally beautiful and powerful in their own right. They serve a common purpose and no doubt attract a specific genre of supercar fan boy (with deep pockets nonetheless).
Yet only one has blended and mastered the recipe for an everyday supercar. A car that is not only breathtakingly beautiful and admired on walls by many teenagers, but also provides practicality and a dizzying performance that credits the supercar status it has attained.
And we, together with the thousands of people who have voted for, believe the winner cannot be anything else other than the Audi R8 V10 Plus. |
|
The nameplate sounds like a scientific formula, but the science and engineering behind this car is equally stunning. From the renowned quattro all-wheel drive system to the acclaimed Audi space frame, the hot-blooded genes of the R8 and the innovative technologies of Audi ultra have produced a vehicle that has become breathtaking in the literal sense of the word.
Besides, it is endorsed - not once but thrice - by the technical and engineering mastermind Tony Stark. Thanks to the increased engine power of 541bhp, you will reach 100km/h from standstill in just 3.5 seconds – a reasonable timing for a spectacular show when you are first in line behind one of the thousand traffic lights.
Yes, it neither has 700bhp like its Italian counterparts nor does the roof fold down to dry your damp hair in record time. But you have to remind yourself, in a land scarce country like Singapore where the term 'Gran Touring' makes little sense and grid locked traffic exposes us to harmful CO2 emission, the Audi R8 V10 Plus is as good as it gets.
It is not the destination so much as the journey - it doesn't matter where you are getting to, it's how – and the Audi R8 V10 plus is how. |

While Porsche is credited to inventing hybrid technology decades ago, it was Toyota who mass commercialised it with the highly critical Prius hatchbacks. Its premium marque – Lexus – carries over the technical know-how with renowned comfort and styling the premium Japanese marque is credited for.
Reinforcing the company's commitment to the future of full hybrid drive technology, the new Lexus IS300h is equipped with a second generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system. The new system offers significant reductions in fuel consumption and harmful emissions including CO2, despite not lacking in performance.
The full hybrid drive system combines a 105kW rated electric motor to a newly developed, 2.5-litre, 133kW rated four-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine, featuring some of the finest engine management features. |

The rear-wheel driven hybrid is linked to the power unit via an Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT). In total the compact sports sedan delivers with 164kW, which is good for a century sprint timing of 8.3 seconds before climbing to a maximum speed of 200km/h.
On the contrary, despite the performance, the new Lexus full hybrid returns an average fuel consumption of 23.2km/L, and class-leading CO2 emissions from 99g/km.
The new IS300h is also the first Lexus full hybrid to install the battery beneath the luggage deck board, which frees up valuable load space in the boot equivalent to capacity offered by the petrol engine models.
A compact sedan hybrid that does not hinder the average commuter experience with decent boot space, exciting performance levels and looks to match the punchy powerplant? It seems like a fair deal to us. |

Diesel of the year Audi A6 Avant Diesel |
|
|
|
Many of us may still be clouded with misconceptions of diesel power, often associating it with filthy emissions, and inferior to its petrol-driven compatriots in terms of refinement and power. Of course, advancements in technology has made combusting diesel cleaner and more efficient.
Over the years diesel power has been increasingly adopted on passenger cars – and more recently have been 'upgraded' to neck breaking performance models like the X6 M50d.
Not keen to lose the game, Audi has responded with a 3.0-litre bi-turbo TDI diesel with two of its tested and proven recipes - the motorsports-derived quattro all-wheel drive and the Avant body shape. The lump is exclusive to the A6 Avant on out little red dot.
The car is not without practicality too as it offers proper seating for five and by adopting a wagon shape has blessed the family man's racer with up to 1,680 litres of cargo load space. |
|
The 3.0-litre force fed oil burner churns out a generous 650Nm of torque – resulting in a 5.3 second jolt to the seat acceleration to the century mark, only 0.6 seconds shy of the equally potent RS4 Avant.
You do not have to be heavy footed to enjoy the blistering performance of the estate, as its low-end torque is more than sufficient everyday usability – available from just 1,450rpm.
Perhaps the most exciting feature of this car is performance with responsibility, as the A6 TDI would still return a wallet friendly 12km/L without having to pinch on the throttle.
The A6 Avant TDI is as good as a RS4, a people carrier, and bends heart throbbing performance with responsible efficiency. Perhaps it is time to ditch the dream of owning the unattainable Ferrari or Lamborghini and settle for something more practical and suited to our island. |

People's Pick of the year Suzuki Swift Sport |
|
|
|
Now into its second generation, the Swift Sport remains as something dear in everyone's heart. It is not hard to see why with its back-to-basics approach to driving fun and affordable running costs.
As with the previous generation Swift Sport, it sticks to being a natural aspirated little hatch. Even though it only produces 134bhp from its 1.6-litre engine, it never fails to encourage the driver to push it all the way over 7,000rpm before attempting to slot into the next available gear.
On the topic of gears, the joys of manually selecting gears oneself have never been better magnified with the onslaught of dual-clutch gearboxes. It is then good news to report that the Swift Sport remains one of the better manual gearbox equipped cars locally. Optimal clutch pedal placement allows the driver to heel and toe in spirited driving too. |
|
When the straight turns into corners, one can bet the Swift Sport will be up to the task. With a kerb weight of 1,045kg, it is very chuckable and remains neutral when pushed. Mid corner bumps are soaked up well the car remains composed when pushed to its limit. Rear passengers will not be found complaining with its decent compromise between having good handling and a comfort ride.
With the new Swift Sport, cabin space has grown larger and the rear passenger can now feel more at ease on long journey. General plastic quality has also improved and the car has many sweet features such as HID headlights and sports seats.
As someone who thinks about cars and driving enjoyment, the Suzuki Swift Sport is probably the only new car around in Singapore that can be bought new without costing a bomb and also allows the owner to have some fun every now and then. Little surprise it gets to be the people's pick then. |

Sgcarmart's Editor's Pick Volkswagen Golf |
|
|
|
At Sgcarmart, we appreciate simplicity and the Volkswagen Golf epitomises just that.
The legendary German hatchback builds on the success of its predecessors, of which over 29 million have been sold, bringing new levels of comfort, practicality, safety and efficiency to its class.
Being a car that's a bang for buck is just a mere bonus. What's more relevant is the vast improvement this seventh generation has shown over its predecessors combined. In addition to having a bigger boot space, it's 100kg lighter than the car it replaces, which in turn improves the car's efficiency by 23 percent.
The Volkswagen Golf looks the part, too, with sharper lines on its sheet metal and an excellent attention to details and engineering mastery. |
|
Needless to say, this hatch is a ballet dancer on the tarmac. Handling is neat and precise with easy directional changes. The Golf is also extremely nimble on twisty roads, remaining composed even over surface irregularities. Bumps are dispatched smoothly and do little to shake the car from its intended line, presenting a ride comfort that's far more matured than many of its peers.
We reckon the most important factor that gives the Volkswagen Golf an edge over the rest of the hatchbacks in the market is the fact that driving one says nothing about you. And that's the magical part. Anyone can drive this hatch simply because it's one classy machine.
Not all cars can say the same. |

Best Engine of the year Mazda6 |
|
|
|
In the increasingly competitive market of downsizing and turbocharging, we chose Mazda's SKYACTIV-G engine as the engine of the year. It resides in the Mazda6 as a 2.5-litre unit and is hooked up to an equally efficient six-speed automatic. It produces 187bhp and 250Nm of torque and sends the Mazda6 to 100km/h in a scant 8.1seconds. When in a less frantic mood, it is claimed to be able to achieve 15.2km/L.
It achieves this based a few factors. Mazda is proud to claim that they employ a very high compression ratio in this engine - in this case a staggering 14:1. The reason for such a high figure is to squeeze more energy out of the piston's stroke. However, they had to prevent knocking due to the excess heat build up. In order to do so, a new 4-2-1 exhaust header was utilised so that temperatures could be kept in check. |
|
Direct Injection also improves the engine's ability to get a high compression ratio. And because the fuel atomisation is so fine, Mazda gets much better cooling effect from spraying the fuel directly into the combustion chamber.
Mazda also looked into other ways like using 0W20 oil and reducing the amount of friction generated in its pistons, rods and crankshaft in the engine. Lessening the engine block's overall weight also help keep in line with its less-equals-better philosophy.
All these factors add up to make Mazda's engine a deserving winner. And the Japanese marque reckons its current batch of high compression ratios engines are just a start. |

Best Improved Car of the year Toyota Vios |
|
|
|
From the distinct grille to its sporty silhouette, everything about the Vios has been improved. Starting with the exterior design, its swift lines on the sides of its sheet metal help to define its sportiness. They run all the way to the back to meet redesigned taillight clusters, which, together with the wing mirrors, are fitted with aerodynamic fins for improved stability and performance.
Complementing the looks are new projector headlamps that provide better illumination in times of poor visibility. The Catamaran roof completes the sporty design of the new Vios while also enhancing aero efficiency.
Toyota also worked hard on its drivetrain to further improve the Vios's efficiency. Although the engine and gearbox aren't brand new, it is said that the new car offers a 5 percent improvement in fuel consumption over the previous Vios with the help of various newer and lighter components in the engine bay.
|
|
Also contributing to the improvement in fuel consumption is the new Vios's the lighter kerbweight. Depending on the variant, the new version is between 10kg and 30kg lighter than the car it replaces. In order to achieve this, Toyota constructed the roof to be thinner without compromising strength and also made use of more high-tensile steel (56 percent compared to 30 percent previously) for the body structure.
This is nothing short of amazing amazing considering the new Vios is pumped up to stand at 4,410mm by 1,700mm by 1,475mm (L x W x H), which is 110mm longer and 15mm taller than the outgoing model.
Stepping inside, you'll be greeted by premium features like DVD infotainment system, fine stitching and a much-welcomed instrument panel that has been moved from its previous location in the middle of the dash to a more conventional position behind the rake-adjustable steering wheel. The interior is decked out in solid two-tone plastics accompanied by chrome accents, which help to give the cabin a brighter feel.
All of these are completed by a dynamic driving experience unique to a car with the best fuel efficiency in its class, which no doubt places the Vios in a class beyond. |
