The facelifted, third generation Honda Jazz RS returns to continue the legacies of its predecessors. The pre-facelift version previously bagged the title of Compact Hatchback of the Year in 2014 and four years on, several updates to the model once again propel it back into top spot.
Its face has now become slightly sharper and more aggressive thanks to the redesigned front grille and front splitter. You also get LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, and LED tail lamps as well.
Elsewhere, the Jazz RS continues to be a well-equipped car for its affordable price point. It offers Honda's ULTRA seats, which can be folded in a 60/40 split, as well as being folded entirely (with the seat bases folded up) to give you even more cargo space. And its 363-litre boot can be expanded to accommodate a whopping 1,314 litres of cargo when needed.
As a compact hatchback, the Jazz RS leads the segment with the amount of space it offers, which even outsizes some cars a size bracket above. |
|
Additionally, you get a 7.0-inch infotainment system, two USB ports, a rear view camera, keyless entry, as well as cruise control. Hill Start Assist and the Vehicle Stability Assist system also come as standard, too.
Driven sensibly, the Jazz RS is great news all around. Power from its 1.5-litre engine is sufficient, while its Earth Dreams CVT transmission allows for smooth acceleration. More importantly, its fuel economy is excellent, its steering is light, making for easy piloting, and its ride is also forgiving and comfortable.
It's easy to see that the Jazz RS continues to deliver that balance of practicality and personality that has made previous generation models so lovable. Together with a new face and some good gear, it's no wonder that it's once again our Compact Hatchback of the Year. |

VOLVO V40

|
The Volvo V40 is a stylish, comfortable and refined hatch that packs plenty of punch. This year, it goes against a very strong competitor, the MINI One 5-door, but manages to come out on tops.
Its sheet metal is a clever piece of design with the aggressive wedge shape of the car achieved with a low bonnet enhanced by expressive lines, with some slight enhancements as well, all from the R-Design basket of items.
Inside, the V40 impresses with a digital dashboard with an 8.0-inch digital display, a smattering of R-Design trimming, a panoramic glass roof and seats that offer good support and plenty of cushioning. |
|
And with ample oomph on tap from its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, the V40 is as quick and perky as it is stylish, with 0-100km/h taking just 6.9 seconds. Maximum torque is delivered at just 1,300rpm, so it accelerates immediately and effectively.
At the same time, the V40 is also comfortable and easy to drive. Its suspension is nicely damped and its steering is accurate. It is very much a comfortable, practical and sensible premium hatchback, albeit one with quite a bit of speed.
And, considering the fact that this is the most affordable Volvo you can buy right now, the V40 is undoubtedly the most enticing entry into the premium segment this year, if you are looking for a hatchback. |

Despite going up against some immensely tough competition such as the MINI John Cooper Works and the Renault Megane RS, the Volkswagen Golf R has managed to emerge as the hottest hatchback this year.
Subtlety is the name of the game for the Golf R, which is good news for those looking for a pocket rocket that will fly under the radar. From the onset, the Golf R takes a more gentlemanly approach to its looks than its aforementioned rivals.
But do not be fooled by the tame design of the Golf R because what lies beneath its bonnet is anything but, thanks to its sweet EA888 engine. The turbocharged 2.0-litre heart of the Golf R has gotten a slight bump in power output, from 276bhp to 286bhp, and comes with 380Nm of torque. It now also has an extra gear, bumping its predecessor's six-speed DSG up to a seven-speed.
Working together, the EA888 and seven-speed DSG contribute to a 250km/h top speed, as well as a 0-100km/h time of just 4.6 seconds. And with its four-wheel drive system, the Golf R can launch itself off the line just as easily in the wet as it will in the dry. It will also allow you to sling shot out of corners without having to worry about wrapping yourself around a tree. |
|
But more than just that, the Golf R stands out from the competition by being an entirely usable and comfortable everyday hot hatch. It isn't as brutal as some people make it out to be, thanks to its ride quality that doesn't send shocks up your spine every time you hit a bump, especially in Comfort mode.
Of course if you're going to get this car, Race should be the only mode you'll ever be in. It makes everything tighter, more responsive, and a hell lot more fun to drive. But either way, there isn't a more complete and better-rounded hot hatch at this moment than the Golf R. |
|
|
The Volkswagen Golf has, for many years, been seen as the benchmark of the hatchback segment. This time around, it's no different. The latest iteration of the Golf is a facelift of the seventh generation model and if anything, it's more appealing than ever before.
Powered by a boosted 1.4-litre that's good for 123bhp and 200Nm of torque, the Golf continues to be a smooth operator that's effortless to drive. And as far as the car's dynamic behaviour is concerned, it also continues to be the Golf we know and love. A planted ride, sharp steering, good agility in corners and excellent ride composure - those qualities are all present.
More importantly, its comfortable and roomy interior is the most premium-looking and has the best fit and finish in its class. And in typical Teutonic fashion, getting around the controls in its cabin is simple and straightforward, with most functions just a one-button press away. |
|
Depending on how you decide to spec your Golf, it can also be had with safety systems such as Blind Spot Sensor with Rear Traffic Alert and proactive occupant protection.
It comes as no surprise then, that the Golf is again one of the best-equipped hatchbacks, and certainly the most feel-good one in its segment. As far as affordable creature comforts go, the Golf is once more the hatchback to have. |
|
|
The Skoda Octavia is a practical, comfortable and affordable sedan that embraces its humble and honest nature. The Octavia may only be equipped with a minute 1.0-litre engine, but it is very usable for daily driving.
Nicely paired to the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, it tosses out 114bhp and 200Nm of torque - from as low as 2,000rpm - to the front wheels. This makes for acceleration that feels a lot faster than what the spec sheet may suggest.
With its light steering and soft suspension, the Octavia also proves that it is made for comfortable and easy driving, of which it does very well. It will get you from one place to another in an entirely fuss-free manner. |
|
But more importantly, the Octavia impresses with its cargo-hauling capabilities and well-insulated cabin. It can swallow five occupants with ease while its generous 590-litre boot is wide and deep enough for a week's supply of groceries.
As if that's not enough, the Octavia also comes with features that are mostly associated with premium models. In the glovebox, for instance, air-conditioning vents are available to cool your drinks, which is a great idea in sunny Singapore.
Ticking all the right boxes for a practical sedan, you can be assured that the Octavia deserves its title as the best in its class. It may be 'new' to its segment here in Singapore, but it is big on doing what it does well. |

With each update, the current generation Mazda 6 has been continually improved since it was first launched back in 2013.
Key among the new updates is the car's refreshed design. The horizontal grille from past iterations makes way for a larger front grille flanked by slimmer lights, drawing inspiration from the Vision Coupe Concept. This helps to accentuate an already handsome car, with its flowing lines and sleek dimensions.
Inside, the cabin has also been updated, including a new 8.0-inch infotainment screen, additional wood, acrylic and aluminium trimming, as well as ventilated front seats. These further enhance a premium and high-quality cabin. |
|
Under the bonnet, the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine gets a tiny bit more power and torque, but the key enhancement is the cylinder deactivation technology, improving the engine's fuel economy. On the go, the engine feels more refined than before, delivering power in a smooth and eager manner. With its accurate steering and sure-footedness, the Mazda 6 also copes with corners with remarkable agility for a large family sedan.
The extensive changes to the 2018 Mazda 6 add up to a car that feels more comfortable, more refined and more premium than before. The constant refinement of the brand's proven formula has produced a product that feels much more premium and mature than its price tag would suggest, and it is for this key reason that it elevates itself over its competitors. |
|
|
The sleek and sporty-looking Lexus IS 300 has been updated with some subtle exterior changes, including new head and tail lamps that endow it with an even sharper disposition. Additionally, the aggressive F Sport grille and twin trapezoidal exhaust tips accentuates the car's athletic demeanour.
Inside, the cabin boasts high levels of comfort, refinement and quality, customary for the Japanese brand. The infotainment screen has also been enlarged to 10.3-inches, while a new drive mode has also been added to the Drive Mode Select system. Where the IS 300 stands out over its peers is in the attention to detail inside the cabin - from the stitching to the way the buttons click, you can feel the meticulous work that has been done to deliver that sense of quality and craftsmanship.
Where the Lexus IS 300 most impresses is the way it drives. As you'd expect from a Lexus, it is supremely capable in delivering a serene and comfortable ride. The ride is firm but forgiving, allowing you to cruise along in comfort. However, when you put your foot down, you're not disappointed either. The turbocharged 2.0-litre engine kicks out 241bhp and 350Nm of torque, sent to the rear wheels in a smooth and surprisingly linear manner. |
|
Coupled with a quick-shifting eight-speed gearbox and an accurate steering rack, this allows you to push the car into corners much harder than you'd expect. Planted and well-balanced through corners, the IS 300 is also capable of delivering generous amounts of fun when you demand it.
In a segment that tends towards sensible, practical but slightly bland cars, the Lexus IS 300 stands out by focusing on delivering an emotional experience - a combination of its bold exterior design, high-quality cabin and dynamic drive. |

Exciting and desirable aren't qualities normally associated with this Korean manufacturer, but with the brand new Stinger, Kia has made a car that possesses those qualities, and then some.
It starts with the design. The Stinger, with its stretched proportions and aggressive styling, is a car that will definitely turn heads. Inside, the Stinger exhibits a level of quality and finish that is a clear step up from what we've come to expect from the brand.
Where the car truly reveals itself is the way it drives. The 3.3-litre V6 powerplant, especially, delivers scintillating performance to the tune of 365bhp and 510Nm of torque. This propels the car from 0-100km/h just 4.9 seconds. But it's not just about straight-line speed. Regardless of the engine, the Stinger is exciting and fun to drive, thanks to a tight chassis, sharp steering and great balance. |
|
The Stinger also gets a wealth of equipment as standard, including a head-up display, ventilated seats, a sunroof, an 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, and a wireless phone charger. It also has necessary space and creature comforts to excel as an everyday family car for five people.
The Stinger isn't without its faults. However, we came away impressed by its overall polish and refinement, delivering a level of quality that many did not see coming. With its boldness of intention and thoroughness of execution, the Kia Stinger has exceeded any and all of our expectations about the car. |

Considering the BMW 5 Series was our Car of the Year last year, it's perhaps no surprise that it still reigns supreme within its segment. However, this isn't just a cursory nod towards the model's dominance.
Offered with four different powertrain options here in Singapore, the 5 Series is capable of meeting the needs of different drivers. The 520i delivers the most 'affordable' experience, with a faultlessly smooth 2.0-litre engine delivering a somewhat modest 184bhp and 290Nm of torque.
On the other end of the spectrum, there is the choice of the 540i, powered by a creamy smooth 335bhp 3.0-litre engine. Additionally, buyers also have the option of the 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid model, which offers an additional dose of electrified efficiency. |
|
That said, there's a lot more similarities across the model range than differences. Even the most affordable 520i variant comes with a wealth of standard equipment, including gesture control and comprehensive safety equipment. The cabin delivers generous amounts of space, serenity and quality.
Also, where the 5 Series stands head and shoulders above its competitors is the way it drives. Behind the wheel, the car feels dynamic, enthusiastic and communicative in a way that its rivals struggle to match. And when driven lightly, the car is comfortable, pliant and effortlessly easy to drive.
With its ability to deliver a wealth of options to buyers, without compromising the key qualities that define the model, the 5 Series continues to stand out in its class. |

Within the luxury sedan segment, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has always stood out for its high levels of comfort, sublimely comfortable ride and pioneering technology. These qualities are amply present in the facelifted S-Class, which brings with it a range of improvements for 2018.
The key addition to the updated S-Class is Intelligent Drive, with new and extended driving assistance functions that allow the car to achieve semi-autonomous driving. This augments the car's unrivalled placidity and ride suppleness - the air suspension easily soaks up any imperfections on the road.
The S-Class is also powered by a creamy smooth bi-turbo V6 engine, paired to a nine-speed transmission that allows for quiet and serene driving.
The business-class cabin of the S-Class is also a delightful place to be in. It is a rich and high-quality environment made up of wood veneer and an ample slathering of premium leather, with faultless fit and finish. The seats, both front and rear, also offer unrivalled comfort, while the top-notch noise insulation delivers extreme civility and serenity. |
|
The facelift also adds the widescreen cockpit, with a pair of 12.3-inch high-definition displays that can be configured to display a wealth of information. Additionally, subtle updates have also been made to the car's exterior, including new 19-inch wheels, multibeam LED headlamps, a redesigned radiator grille and larger air intakes.
Ultimately, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class rises above its competition by being the car that best insulates its passengers from the world outside. With its focus on delivering premium luxury and extreme comfort, the S-Class continues to be the standard-bearer of the luxury limo club. |

Is there such a thing as too much? Not so in Mercedes-AMG's book. With more than 600bhp thrown into its E 63 S, AMG thinks it just about right.
To put that into perspective, Lamborghini is still selling the Huracan LP610-4 with almost the same amount of power. And we are talking about a current supercar, not some racing special that is a one-off.
Can you actually use all that power on the roads and in an E-Class? Surprisingly, the answer is yes. Thanks to its new all-wheel drive system, we can now have our cake and eat it, too. If you are an enthusiast, you should know by now that its all-wheel drive system can toggle between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive via its massive infotainment screen, allowing the driver to go drifting when the situation allows or just have maximum traction for daily use.
Elsewhere, the superb 4.0-litre V8 biturbo is strong and responsive. Every time you think that's all it can do, it shocks you with even more speed as you push the throttle closer to the carpet. Of course, while doing so, the music from the engine is almost unbeatable. Gurgling at low revs and rorty at higher speeds, it makes one feels invincible. |
|
And once you have had enough fun, the car cossets as well as any of its tamer E-class siblings. In Comfort mode, the ride is firm, but pliant and forgiving, even on its big 20-inch light-alloy rims. In fact, it does it slightly better than BMW's M5. Also, like any E-Class, there is plenty of space in the rear and the boot.
So, what Mercedes-AMG has created is an executive sedan that can do both the comfort and super performance. As such, the E 63 S very much deserves our Premium Performance Sedan award. |

You could say that a car like the Toyota Alphard is an example of a default choice when it comes to large MPVs, but if you are in the market for one, do not discount the Maxus G10.
Marketed as a luxury vehicle, the G10 is an MPV from leading Chinese automaker SAIC. It is also the first passenger vehicle under the Maxus brand, which has been around for a few years.
So what exactly makes it a winner this year? For starters it is big, with a wheelbase of 3,198mm. These numbers translate to a cabin that's ridiculously roomy and easily accessible via an automatic sliding door system on both sides of the car that can be controlled via the centre console. |
|
With a height of more than 1.9m, you could also walk around inside quite easily. The two large sunroofs overhead help make the cabin bright and airy, too. And apart from easily accessing the cabin, you also sit higher than in most cars, giving you a good, clear view of the road ahead.
On the move, its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, which produces 210bhp and a very useful 330Nm of torque, provides it with ample verve. Most importantly for families, the G10 also rides as smoothly if not smoother than its rivals.
Combined with a reasonable price tag, it's tough to not recommend the Maxus G10 to anyone looking to buy a large MPV, and tougher to not crown it the king of its segment this year. |

The Skoda Kodiaq was chosen as one of the first cars to mark the rebirth of Skoda in Singapore after the Czech brand left the scene in 2013.
Named after the Kodiak, a large brown bear found in Alaska, this seven-seater SUV is pretty huge despite not being a full-sized, large SUV. As a 5+2, the car wins the interior volume race easily compared to the rest of our entrants in the SUV category.
And with all seven seats used, there is still 270 litres of boot space available, increasing to a very useful 630 litres if the last-row seats are folded.
Elsewhere in the cabin, the quality of the fit and finish in the Skoda is almost on par with a similarly classed Volkswagen SUV such as the Tiguan. Combined with a clutter-free dashboard and plenty of adjustment available in the driver seat and steering wheel, it is easy to get comfortable in the car. |
|
One of our favourite features is the built-in umbrella slots in the front doors, akin to those you would find on a Rolls-Royce - a thoughtful feature all cars should have.
Another plus for the Kodiaq is its turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that produces a healthy 178bhp and 320Nm of torque. Paired with a fast and smooth-shifting dual-clutch gearbox, the Kodiaq feels light and brisk, be it in the city or the open highways.
And going by Skoda's reasonable prices, the Kodiaq sure makes for an unbeatable bang-for-buck family SUV. |

The BMW X3 is a premium mid-sized SUV that is spacious and dynamic for drivers who prefer the urban jungle. In fact, at 4,708m x 1,891mm x 1,676mm (L x W x H), the X3 could be easily mistaken as a full-sized SUV like the BMW X5 to a casual observer, which is a huge plus point.
With its increased dimensions over its predecessor, the new X3 inevitably offers more space - head, leg and shoulders - all around for three passengers at the back and two up front.
But more than just the obvious, the X3 also offers drivers the kind of advanced technology and a richer mix of materials that are on par with the BMW 5 Series and the BMW 7 Series flagship, making it a class leader in this aspect.
More importantly, if you like your SUV with a good dose of driving pizzazz, the X3 will not disappoint as it is easily the best-driving one in its class. The X3 xDrive30i variant alone is capable of sending 252bhp and 350Nm of twisting force to all four wheels through the calling of your right foot. |
|
This enables it to go from 0-100km/h in a mere 6.3 seconds, which is highly impressive for an SUV its size. Couple all that power and torque with its accurate and smooth-shifting eight-speed transmission, and overtaking slower-moving vehicles on the highway is done so in a manner that's very effortless and seamless.
And best of all, while its suspension is sporty, the X3 manages to soak up bumps and ruts in its stride and it's never uncomfortable on the go. Around town, the X3 is every bit as civilised and well-behaved as any other luxury vehicle.
Thus, as an all-in-one premium mid-sized SUV, there's really quite a lot to boast about the X3. It's dynamic, comfortable and most certainly spacious, enough for it to lead its class this year. |

The new Porsche Cayenne continues to be a performance-oriented premium SUV that's capable of sporty driving and comfortable cruising in equal measure.
Backed by more power from its new twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V6, the mid-range Cayenne S variant offers a thumping 434bhp and 550Nm of torque. Paired to a new eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, this premium SUV will go from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds. But it's the way that power is delivered that helps the Cayenne stand out from the competition.
It responds to all of your inputs with remarkable immediacy, while its acceleration is both seamless and linear, making it incredibly rewarding to drive hard. And the Cayenne's confidence in its corner-carving abilities is just as impressive, with little roll considering its size and weight. |
|
Together with its communicative and positively weighted steering, the Cayenne is easy to place on the road and easy to drive fast. You point it where you want to go, and it will obey without hesitation.
And as expected of Porsche, there are sumptuous materials, seamlessly integrated technology and a lot of style in the Cayenne's cabin. It does not only look the best but also feels the best in this aspect. Elsewhere, the Cayenne remains practical for families, with comfortable seating for five. Its boot is expandable from 770 litres to 1,710 litres, with a flat and wide load entrance.
As such, for anyone considering a premium SUV that can double as a sports car, there's little reason to want any other after a go in the Cayenne. |

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe is a sleek and stylish performance SUV capable of delivering a forceful shove with a wonderfully sonorous soundtrack, thanks to the romping 3.0-litre AMG V6 biturbo engine up front that delivers 367bhp and 520Nm of torque to all four wheels.
As an AMG-badged car, you also get all the AMG bits and bobs complementing the GLC 43's coupe-like proportions, like a more aggressive-looking AMG front apron, a chrome front splitter and a particularly handsome rear end. Inside the spacious interior, the sporty theme continues, with aggressive-looking details like red contrast stitching and the bright red seat belts. |
|
More importantly, the GLC 43 performs incredibly well even as a regular SUV for the family - not crashy and overly aggressive as you would expect from an AMG-badged car. In its Comfort setting, the ride is magnificently pliant and forgiving. In Sport or Sport Plus mode, the throttle response is much sharper and the ride firms up, but not to the point of discomfort.
The GLC 43 certainly has enough driving dynamism befitting its AMG badge and feels nimble and sharp through corners with body roll kept in check thanks to the air suspension system. Whether it is space, pace or grace, the GLC 43 delivers on all fronts. |

The C3 Aircross is definitely one of the quirkier-looking crossovers available today. Built on the same platform as the Opel Crossland X, its pudgy proportions, slatted rear quarter glass and animated two-tier headlamps give it an unreserved personality that is quintessentially French.
The car's oddball personality continues on the inside, where pops of contrasting trim can be found on the steering, air-con vents and seats. With a wheelbase of 2,604mm, it is about the roomiest small crossover in the market today. The amount of storage bins and cup holders on offer inside also meet the standards of its class including its 410-litre boot, meaning that it delivers on the practicality front as well. |
|
The C3 Aircross is pretty decent to drive, too. Powered by the PSA Group's PureTech 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine, it churns out 110bhp and 205Nm of torque - available from a low 1,500rpm. This translates to a punchy drive that anyone can enjoy.
This year, there is no car that comes close to the Citroen C3 Aircross in this segment in regards to how chic and stylish it looks, with a good dose of practicality added into the mix. |
|
|
What is most striking about the Toyota C-HR is how unordinary it is and how it's a radical step away from what we've come to expect from the Japanese manufacturer.
With its collection of sharp lines, curved sheet metal and pointy angles, the C-HR is certainly striking to look at and a fresh face for Toyota. The sloping roofline and tapered rear windows give off a very unique, coupe-like appearance, which is quite unlike the rest of its segment.
The C-HR comes with a comprehensive suite of equipment and safety technologies, too. It is packed with the latest Toyota Safety Sense gizmos, which include Lane Departure Alert, |
|
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Automatic High Beam, and Pre-Collision System.
The C-HR also feels more grown-up from behind the wheel, and almost European. The suspension is well-damped and impressively pliant, soaking up bumps better than many of its rivals. Its steering is also heavier and offers better feel on the roads.
The C-HR's engaging looks and drive will certainly reach out to a new group of buyers looking for something more unorthodox. At the same time, it allows you to embrace a very unique offering - without losing the appeal of a sensible Toyota. |

Under its stylish two-tone exterior, the XC40 boasts generous amounts of space and convenience features for passengers and luggage alike. Foldable hooks under the glove box, long door pockets that will accommodate large items like laptops, as well as the 460-litre boot, mean that you will never be short of storage capacity. The Porsche 911 Carrera T (T stands for 'Touring') offers subtle differences from the standard Carrera, but what hasn't changed is its pure and joyous dynamic performance.
What the 911 Carrera T does get that the standard Carrera doesn't is equipment to improve the car's dynamic behaviour. The Porsche Active Suspension Management system comes as standard, which lowers the car by 20mm, you have a weight-optimised Sport Chrono Package, a rear limited-slip differential, and a rear-axle steering system that can be optionally had.
As a result of these additions, the steering is sharp and direct, and definitely one of the best in the market. Traction is ample, too, thanks to the engine sitting over the rear axle helping the fat tyres grip even better to the tarmac. The 911 Carrera T delivers everything you want from a performance coupe like the 911 - responsive, agile and lots of fun. |
|
At the same time, Porsche's lightning-quick dual-clutch PDK transmission is still one of the very best in the automotive world. But more importantly, the 911 Carrera T is offered with the option of a manual gearbox, which is a sign of it being a fantastic driver's car, through and through, and our favourite of the lot this year. |

Take the highly desirable A5 Coupe with its sleek design and lop off its roof and you will pretty much get the silhouette of the Cabriolet version. Being a convertible means that it will drop its top at the touch of a button - 15 seconds later, you will be basking in the glory of the sun, whilst cruising in impeccable style.
Equipped with a 2.0-litre TFSI engine producing 188bhp and 320Nm of torque, the A5 Cabriolet has ample power to bring it to a comfortable top speed of 238km/h.
Inside the cabin, a simple and minimalistic layout makes for a delightful place to be in. With ergonomically placed buttons, there is no need to second-guess the functions of each one. You can simply take your seat and meddle around with the switchgears, and get used to the controls within a quarter of a day. |
|
While the A5 Cabriolet is no thoroughbred sports car, it is dynamically accomplished. With an undoubtedly predictable characteristic and ample grip, the A5 Cabriolet glides along creamily and swallows tarmac smoothly, exuding traits of a grand tourer.
The A5 Cabriolet comfortably seats four while retaining a highly useable boot space of 380 litres, matching those in hatchbacks such as the Volkswagen Golf. Want to cruise with the top down with a couple of friends? Look no further than the A5 Cabriolet as it offers you a comfortable drive, classy styling and all of that top-down goodness with little compromise. |

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF VARIANT
Price: N/A | Distributor: Volkswagen Group Singapore
|
|
|
Like its hatchback counterpart, the Golf Variant offers a great combination of space, practicality and driveability. With the familiar, handsome front end, there is clearly no compromise of style despite the increased space inside, which brings practicality up several notches.
Available with a 1.4-litre engine that delivers 123bhp and 200Nm of torque, the Golf Variant is no slouch. The engine has ample punch that makes for smooth and easy acceleration, while the seamless DSG gearbox completes the package.
Stepping into the Variant, you will notice the lack of differences from the Golf hatchback, which isn't a bad thing at all. As it can be seen, the similarities extend past the front fascia to the interior, offering the same level of ergonomics and quality of fit and finish. |
|
Lengthening the hatchback version by a mere 309mm nets a massive boot space of 605 litres that can easily accommodate all of your belongings. The rear benches can also be knocked down, which increases the boot space to a whopping 1,620 litres, pushing the envelope on functionality. At just 4,567mm long, and with a similar wheelbase as the hatchback, there is also no compromise in terms of driveability or manoeuvrability. In fact, it is still shorter than most typical sedans.
The very fact that the Variant retains so much goodness of the Golf hatchback we love, value-added with a larger rear end and a more grown-up personality, makes it a leader in its class. |

PORSCHE PANAMERA SPORT TURISMO
Price: N/A | Distributor: Porsche Singapore
|
|
|
The second generation Panamera saw significant improvements all around, with noticeable changes to the car's looks. It is now tauter, leaner and more 911-esque. Porsche took the recipe that made the 911 great, and gave it an elongated body with a muscular rear end, creating the stunning Panamera Sport Turismo.
Powered by a buttery smooth V6 turbocharged engine that delivers 326bhp and 450Nm of torque on tap, the Panamera Sport Turismo has enough power to complete the century sprint in 5.3 seconds and to reach a top speed of 259km/h.
With the estate body style, there's improved headroom for the rear passengers thanks to the flatter roofline as compared to the saloon variant. There is also a 20-litre increase in boot space, up to 520 litres on offer. While that does not seem like much, there is actually also a much wider loading aperture and a lower loading lip due to the new tailgate, improving practicality. |
|
Apart from the difference in body style, the Panamera Sport Turismo shares the same mechanical bones of the standard Panamera, which results in similar, almost identical driving dynamics. This means that it is the same well-planted car that tackles corners with extreme competence while delivering a pliant ride.
The Panamera Sport Turismo offers a fantastic combination of sportiness, comfort and luxury of the saloon variant, with the added practicality and gorgeous design that makes it a class winner. |

Styled like a traditional compact family sedan, aside from the grille-less front fascia, there is no obvious telltale of the Hyundai Ioniq Electric's cutting-edge electric powertrain. With a familiar design language to the existing petrol-powered cars that all are used to, the shock value when one switches over to the futuristic electric car platform is removed.
Equipped with an electric motor that produces 118bhp and a healthy 295Nm of torque, there is plenty of shove, making overtaking other cars on highways a breeze. While electric motors are known for their instantaneous torque, there is a surprising amount of progressiveness to the torque delivery in the Ioniq Electric, again removing the shock value, easing the everyday owner into ownership of an electric car.
With a full battery capacity of 28kWh, a total range of 240.8km is achieved on a single charge. The range is more than adequate for city use, and keeps range anxiety to a minimum. |
|
Keeping in line with the eco-friendly ethos of electric cars, the Ioniq Electric sports a simple and comfortable interior that is built from a range of recycled or ecologically sensitive materials.
With the Ioniq Electric, you get to enjoy the familiarity of a typical sedan, while basking in the comfort of a silent and eco-friendly operation, all while providing enough features to top the class. |

Aside from the usual powertrain options, the BMW 5 Series is also available as a plug-in hybrid as part of BMW's iPerformance range. Being part of the 5 Series lineup, the Plug-in Hybrid variant unsurprisingly shares the same sporty and executive styling that makes the 5 Series such a success.
The only discernible differences from a conventional 5 Series are the blue details between the grilles and around the BMW logo on the rims - a subtle hint of the futuristic powertrain.
On the 530e, the engine and the electric motor combine to produce 249bhp and 420Nm of torque. With the hybrid drivetrain, you are able to slowly crawl along in a jam with the sole power of the electric motor, greatly reducing fuel consumption while protecting the environment at the same time. |
|
The similarity to a conventional 5 Series continues inside, with a comfortable, premium and well-equipped interior. Decked out in high-quality leather and plastics, and rich soundproofing, there is no doubt about the premium positioning of the 5 Series.
On our roads, the 530e can manage about 33km of full electric range on a single charge, which means that you can travel your entire journey from home to work with no petrol consumed. The short distances that we travel on the congested roads of Singapore makes the BMW 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid the perfect choice of transport here, and a premium one to boot. |

KIA STINGER
Price: N/A | Distributor: Cycle & Carriage Kia
|
|
|
Trying to figure out what the best car of 2018 isn't so simple. On one hand, we could try to parse out the individual mechanical qualities of each car, and try to determine which car has the most objectively 'best' parts. Do that, and we'd likely end up with a car that costs an ungodly amount of money (more money means more engineering, and more engineering tends to deliver better mechanical quality).
On the other hand, we could simply try to figure out what the most popular car of 2018 is. However, our COTY evaluation is neither a scientific experiment nor a popularity contest. In reality, it's somewhere in between the two.
However, there is one more component to consider - expectations. You see, evaluating any car inevitably requires an evaluation of our expectations of it. This brings us to the Kia Stinger. |
|
The Stinger is a car with a bold promise - to create a legitimately sporty sedan with real dynamic quality, offered at a price point that would appeal to the masses. And we must admit, we were initially hesitant.
We're now happy to admit that we were wrong. The Stinger is by no means perfect, but it manages to exceed our expectations in so many ways. From its distinct looks, high-quality cabin to its surprising agility and outrageous performance, the Stinger manages to genuinely surprise us in a time when most cars don't. And we're not alone. When it was launched, there was a buzz about the Stinger, and desirability among buyers.
When it comes to expectations, no car exceeded our expectations the way the Kia Stinger did. It was bold in ambition, but thorough in execution. That's why it is our Car of the Year. |

HONDA JAZZ RS
Price: N/A | Distributor: Kah Motor
|
|
|
It may not be the fastest or the most well-appointed compact hatchback in Singapore but what the Honda Jazz RS does well is offer a great combination of space, pace and grace that few of its rivals can match.
It is no surprise, then, that it has won Sgcarmart's Top Viewed Model for 2018. 2018 also sees a mild facelift for Honda's popular compact hatchback, gifting it a slightly sharper and more aggressive face thanks to the redesigned front grille and front splitter, as well as LED headlamps with integrated LED daytime running lights, and LED tail lamps.
Elsewhere, the Jazz RS continues to do what it does best, offering a ton of space for three at the back and a 363-litre boot that can be expanded to accommodate a total of 1,314 litres - one of the largest in its class. |
|
But more than being just a practical runabout, the Jazz RS also offers a pretty fun drive given its playful, zippy nature, despite its modest 129bhp and 155Nm of torque from a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine.
And of course, there's the dependability and reliability that people associate with the Honda badge. Put all the aforementioned factors together and the result is a car that continues to deliver the practicality, comfort and familiarity that has been its enduring appeal. |
