Car of the Year
BYD Seal Electric
The BYD Seal is also one of Singapore’s most popular EVs and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a handsome sedan filled with advanced technology, along with the driving and safety features that consumers expect, and even in Cat A form, it’s a pretty sweet drive, too. Lastly, to cater to various driving needs, the saloon is available in three versions: Dynamic (134bhp), Premium (308bhp), and the range-topping Performance (523bhp).

If you were blindfolded and took for a ride in this car, chances are you would put out the big names like Porsche, Mercedes-Benz or BMW. So the fact that you see the BYD logo on the steering wheel just speaks for itself. The comfort of this car is quite magnificent. Its suspension absorbs bumps and irregularities on the road so well you wouldn't even notice there was one to begin with. Steering is alright, but don't expect to have fun with it. This is a car focusing on comfort for the family, and it does that pretty well! The seats are really plush, the ride is really soft, and there's pretty good space for all.One of BYD's best works!

BYD Seal was one of my options, but the dealer lowballed me on the trade-in value ($10k lesser than other brands); I eventually ended up with a Polestar 2.

The BYD Seal EV delivers an impressive blend of comfort, style, and performance. The ride is smooth and quiet, and the instant torque makes accelerating feel effortless. With a range of up to 570 km on a full charge, it's ideal for daily commutes or longer trips without worrying about frequent recharging. Inside, the car feels spacious and modern, with an intuitive touchscreen for controlling navigation, media, and climate settings. The Seal EV handles well in both city and highway driving, with responsive steering and a comfortable suspension that easily handles rougher roads. Plus, it’S packed with safety features like lane assist and adaptive cruise control, making driving feel safer and less stressful.Overall, the BYD Seal EV is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to go electric. It’S quick, stylish, and loaded with tech, all while offering a smooth, enjoyable driving experience.

Only downside is the interior design isn't my taste but overall quality is superior to competitors in the class. While looking like a sports sedan, it is actually quite comfortable and not jarring like model 3. Unfortunately, like all EVs, the range is not realistic and is only 65% of advertised, pretty much the same as competitors.
Verdict
In a year dominated by SUVs, electric or otherwise, how is it that an electric sedan is our Car of the Year?

By all accounts, BYD has had a stellar 2024: Besides new models being introduced, sales of the Atto 3 has catapulted the brand to the top of people's minds.

And yet, it is perhaps the Seal that has made the most waves in the car market - offering a tempting blend of electric mobility, wide ranging competencies, and excellent value for money.

It starts with the car's unmistakable exterior look. With its sleek silhouette, sharp lighting details and sport sedan aesthetics, the Seal wears its distinct look clearly and unapologetically.

Inside, the car delivers a high level of comfort and quality. The spacious cabin is decked out in quality materials, offering all passengers on board an experience that is recognisably premium.

Unsurprisingly, the car also comes loaded with technology and features, with the centrepiece being the rotating 15.6-inch infotainment screen. Beyond the standard swathe of car functions, passengers can even have their own Karaoke session with BYD microphones.

And the long list of standard equipment continues. The Seal has all the safety and assistance features you would expect from a modern EV, while ventilated front seats, a 12-speaker DYNAUDIO sound system and dynamic mood lighting further enhance the interior experience.

While the Seal Performance may have the headlining performance figures, it is the entry-level Seal Dynamic that perhaps delivers the greatest value proposition. (With three variants available, there's evidently a model for everyone.) Supremely comfortable and gentle riding, while still delivering plenty of accelerative punch when you need it, it's exactly the sort of car that would appeal to a wide range of buyers.

And it has. In a market dominated by SUVs, the BYD Seal stands out as a sedan that captures people's attentions, and also buyers' wallets. It manages to stand out by delivering a capable EV experience, but in a package that embraces being different amidst a market dominated by sameness.

Interesting on its own, and backed up by customer reception (with the sales figures that follow), the BYD Seal is our Sgcarmart Car of the Year 2024.
