We have returned the leased car to Avis on 31 Mar 21. Until today 26 Apr 21, Avis has not return us our full refund. As mentioned earlier, they charged as $860 for restoring the car to rentable condition although the car is still functional to rent out. Avis insist those scratches on the car are self damage. When we asked for proof of the restoration work that was done, the invoice from the car workshop is $800. When we asked why they have charged us additional $60. They conveniently said it's operational charges. That concluded how dishonest Avis is, trying to conned us of $860 in total. Until now they told us they need another 3 weeks to refund us by bank transfer. In conclusion, we felt cheated by Avis and we will definitely lodged a complaint with CASE (Consumer Association of Singapore.
We would like to share our experience with Avis in the light of helping others to make informed decision as Car Leasing is a long term plan. We are definitely NOT discouraging anyone to lease from Avis. With better luck, you may have better experience with them. This is our post in Avis Facebook page. Apologies for the long review as we want to be transparent to all readers:
" Thank you that finally someone from Avis is replying me in my Facebook. Do you know NONE of your staff including your manager reply or at least acknowledge that they have received our email and will look into it. Then we would have been more understanding and calm.
We can't deny that our emails tone were unpleasant but that is because our emails were completely ignored. We felt like Avis is hijacking our deposit. Your invoice simply said in all Capital Letters "BEING CHARGED FOR DAMAGES.....$860" Including GST. We have attached the invoice here to show that we are not exaggerating.
There is also no clause in our contract terms that said we will receive refund of our deposit only in 3 weeks time upon contract expiry but your staff kept saying that. The clause is also attached here for your reference.
We have leased your car for 5 years and paid our lease promptly through giro. We paid our last 3 months lease by quick funds transfer. For the last one month funds transfer, your finance could not confirm with us that Avis has received our funds transfer even after one week. That got us worried that our funds transfer was lost in transition. Nowadays with high banking technology, Avis would have received the funds over night. How can anyone not be frustrated in this situation.
Most parking lots in Singapore are so tight. It is inevitable and common that some drivers swing open their car doors and accidentally scratched the sides of our car.
Yes we did not return Avis a 5 year old car in brand new condition. We had one accident which we have already paid the penalty of $1K. Although the repair workmanship was sloppy, we still accepted the car as it was then, not knowing that we have to face such undesirable condition.
Avis has its shortfall too. When the car was returned to us after servicing, all our radio channels were changed to other languages. There was once the car was returned to us after servicing with a cigarette bud inside the car burning a hole in the carpet. I have attached the photo to prove my point.
Initially there were also other problems with the car which we have patiently accepted as the customer service of Mr J was excellent and followed up to resolve all the problems as attached. We had been very understanding then and was very pleased with our car lease. It is a pity that he has left Avis. He was one of the best Car Agent we have ever dealt with ".
