It is the Singapore Grand Prix season once again, and Alpine Singapore organized an exclusive meet and greet session with the drivers from BWT Alpine F1 Team where the new Alpine A110 R - the most track-focused version of the A110 - was unveiled for the first time here.
The session started with a special showcase of the Alpine Amos Ananda streetwear collaboration before BWT Alpine drivers Esteban Ocon and Jack Doohan's arrival. The drivers proceed to unveil the thrilling A110 R before their meet and greet session with their fans at the event.
The Alpine A110 R is dubbed the most radical A110 ever made, and it doesn't take much to see why - right from the moment you lay eye on the car once the sheet has been lifted, you'll notice the copious amount of carbon fibre components on it.
Built upon a lightweight aluminium chassis, the A110 was already quite the featherweight contender - but with the Alpine A110 R, the engineers managed to shave of another 34kg to arrive at an impressive 1,082kg for this radical mid-engine sports car. The bonnet, front splitter, side skirts, roof, rear 'window', rear diffuser, rear spoiler and even the 18-inch rims are all made of the lightweight material that makes up the most of an F1 race car.
Weight reduction isn't the only benefit from the special aero package on the A110 R, it also produces an additional 29kg of downforce at top speed to ensure balance and controllability when taking corners at speed. Furthermore, drag has also been reduced by 5%, allowing the A110 R to reach a top speed of 285km/h.
Powered by the same engine from the Alpine A110S, the 4-cylinder 1.8-litre turbocharged engine sends 296bhp at 6,300rpm and 340Nm of torque from just 2,400rpm to the rear wheels through a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. Coupled with the lightweight chassis, the A110 R is able to go from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds, making it the first Alpine to do so in less than four seconds.
The A110 R has also been spruced up in the handling department - it is now 10mm lower than the A110 S. The adjustable shock absorbers allow the car to be further lowered by another 10mm for the ultimate track experience. Meanwhile, the anti-roll bars on the A110 R have also been stiffened by 10% in the front and 15% in the rear, while the suspension springs are also 10% stiffer than before. These changes are made to further increase the handling capability and stability of the car. A 20-click ring can be used to adjust the compression / expansion ratio on the shock absorbers for a personalised driving experience, allowing drivers to get the most out of their circuit driving sessions.
Shod in sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 semi-slick tyres are a set of carbon fibre rims made by Duqueine to improve the car's performance. These unique mismatched rims not only allow improved brake cooling in the front and drag reduction at the rear, they also resulted in a 12.5kg weight-loss.
Apart from the carbon fibre galore, you'll notice the absence of a rear-view mirror - there's no need for one as the entire rear 'window' is covered with a carbon fibre piece as well
Inside, the A110 R has all the leather within replaced with microfibre fabric, while red straps replace traditional door handles for even more weight reduction. The A110 R's extensive diet programme can once again be seen in its cockpit - the pair of race-inspired bucket seats are made out of carbon fibre. The car is also equipped with 6-point competition harnesses to ensure optimal support for both the driver and passenger. Another interesting feature within the A110 R is the absence of a rear-view mirror - with its rear window replaced by an opaque carbon fibre piece and the cabin blocked off from behind the seats, there’s no use for one.
With the A110 R, it is clear that Alpine has pulled out all stops to arrive at an absolute track weapon with one purpose in mind - to be sensational on the racetrack, and yet still certified for the open road.
The Alpine A110 R is priced at $528,800 without COE.
