The managing director of the Audi’s Quattro GmbH, Werner Frowein, says: "Our customer teams provided us with valuable suggestions and stated the wishes for the various fields in which the car is used. We analysed them, and subjected the R8 LMS to further development in many details.”
The doors of the new R8 LMS Ultra are now made of CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) in combination with high-energy absorbing new crash foams, which helps to save weight from the car. Along with the new PS1 seat, passive safety has also now been increased.
Audi has also fitted the R8 LMS Ultra with larger front wheels, as well as wider Michelin tyres, while Bilstein has developed new, lighter compression- and rebound-adjustable dampers, and the silent rubber mounts of the suspension transverse control arms now have uniball joints.
The R8 LMS Ultra is powered by a 5.7-litre V10 that is mid-mounted, and based on the production R8 V10. Power output is rated at 570bhp, according to racing regulations, and Audi has fitted the powerplant with a new exhaust system that features race catalytic converters and increases torque at lower revs.
To improve reliability, Quattro GmbH has updated the transmission as well as the cooling system. The R8 LMS Ultra sports larger coolers for the engine oil and transmission fluids, as well as enlarged side vents for increased air flow to the engine and better air supply to the front radiator.
Audi Quattro GmbH has also tweaked the R8 LMS Ultra’s aerodynamics, with a wider front hood, which according to the homologation rules of every series, can be equipped with louvers. The rear wing has also been more efficiently positioned to maximise downforce and minimise drag at the rear, while at the front a new front plate helps achieve the optimal aerodynamic balance.
Audi will begin deliveries of the new R8 LMS Ultra race car to customers starting from March 2012, while existing customers of the R8 LMS can also opt to retrofit the 2012 Ultra package to their current race cars.
The Audi R8 LMS has dominated its class with 115 wins and 12 international and national titles over the past three years in the Le Mans Racing class, and Audi’s Quattro GmbH division has now updated the race car to further enhance its competitiveness, calling the new version the Ultra.
