By paying a paltry 30 cents more, Jurong West resident Xu Huimei can avoid crowded journeys in a feeder bus and train, and get a seat on a relatively empty bus to work. She can also shave 30 minutes off her commuting time.
Speaking to The Straits Times, Xu was one of the 50 commuters to try on the new City Service 651, which started on Monday. Provided by operator ComfortDelGro Bus, the service starts from Jurong West Avenue 3 and piles ten stops in the estate before heading to Marina Boulevard via Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE).
The trip costs $2.37 with the ez-link card, or $2.70 when paid in cash. Two buses will ply from Jurong West in the morning at 7:30am and 7:45am, and two from Marina Boulevard for return trips at 6:15pm and 6:30pm.
All of the commuters whom The Straits Times spoke to gave very positive feedbacks. Many said although the trip costs slightly more, the new bus service provided better comfort and convenience.
This is the first of ten City Direct services. Nine others will be run by private bus operators, and will start from next January.
Public transport operators SBS Transit and SMRT have also created four new bus services to offer better options to commuters travelling from the suburbs to the city. The new services are part of a $1.1 billion plan to ramp up bus services.
