Hyundai unveils the Sonata Hybrid

The Sonata Hybrid is powered by an all-aluminium 2.4-litre engine that produces 169bhp and 212Nm of torque. This engine is paired to a 40bhp electric motor powered by Lithium Polymer batteries that produces 205Nm of torque. The system is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Hyundai is pitting the Sonata Hybrid against the likes of the Lexus HS250h and the Toyota Camry Hybrid in the US, and claims that the car is more powerful and fuel efficient than all of its rivals. At 1568kg, the Sonata Hybrid is also lighter than its competitors.

Among the features on the Sonata Hybrid designed to maximise efficiency include redesigned aerodynamics that provide a lower drag coefficient, new grille, a different set of wheels, an updated set of interior colours, and a 4.2-inch LCD screen. The Sonata Hybrid is expected to go on sale by 2011.
