Kia Europe is marking World Ocean Day 2023 with four new partnerships, all designed to inspire responsible movement on the ocean.
The firm is now partnering with start-up Polyola, Odyssey Innovation, Sieve, and Waterhaul to make greater use of upcycled plastic retrieved from the ocean.
The surfboard blanks made by Polyola are made from recycled Polyurethane and are 100% recyclable, reducing virgin resource dependency The first firm, Polyola, is based in France, and makes 100% recyclable polyurethane surfboard blanks out of recycled material. Kia is working with Polyola to explore the future of board production, surfing and moving more sustainably.
Odyssey Innovation, meanwhile, makes handplanes from ocean waste and Kia Europe has connected with Odyssey to celebrate their innovative product designed for eco-conscious surfers across the globe.
Kia is also working with Sieve, a firm that makes sustainable surf fins out of recycled body caps, and Waterhaul, which makes eyewear out of abandoned fishing equipment - a danger to marine life.
Beyond these collaborations, Kia is also taking action to harness renewable resources and integrate more eco-friendly materials into its products. This includes phasing-out animal-based leather, applying ten defined sustainable ingredients in its vehicle interiors, and continuously innovating new, bio-based materials.
It's latest all-electric EV9 SUV comes with eco-friendly interior materials such as a leather alternative made from Bio-Polyurethane, while recycled plastics are integrated into various interior parts. The fabric and carpets used in the car are also made from recycled plastic as well as recycled fishing nets.
