If you've always liked the EV9 but found its size (and price tag) too daunting, then the Kia EV5 might be the SUV you're looking for. Unveiled at the 2025 Motor Show, the EV5 drew glances with its looks and the fact that it is made right here in Singapore.
The EV5's scheduled arrival this year was revealed during Kia's Asia Pacific EV Day last November. Last December, rumours emerged from Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre (HMGICS) that it would produce the Kia EV5, in addition to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 models.
The rumours turned out to be true - the EV5 is now the third model produced by HMGICS and the first Kia made in Singapore. In case you're wondering why this is possible, it's because Hyundai owns Kia.
The EV5 is essentially a more compact version of the EV9, so it seats five instead of seven. Its features the brand's 'Digital Tiger Face' and sports the same boxy design that drew fans to the EV9, with wide fenders and D-pillars that have been pushed rearwards to accentuate its dynamic character.
Inside, the cockpit is designed to feel like a high-tech home lounge. Dominating the dashboard is the Panoramic Wide Display, which houses two 12.3-inch screens for the instrument panel and infotainment system, and a 5.3-inch touchscreen for the climate controls. The driver also benefits from a high-definition heads-up display.
To help ensure consistency in how information and functions are displayed, the system utilises a Unified Graphical User Interface. Unique to the EV5 is how it recognises different drivers and enhances personalisation via a fingerprint sensor - Kia says it's the first model in its segment to be so-equipped.
Backseat occupants benefit from the EV5's 2,750mm wheelbase and flat rear floor. For practicality, the car's boot capacity ranges from 513 litres to 1,714 litres (rear seats up/rear seats folded), plus a 67-litre front compartment or 'frunk'. A 3.7kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) socket lets users power small appliances.
Safety-wise, the EV5 has numerous advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The list includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Smart Cruise Control.
The Singapore-made EV5 is specific to our market and fits in the Cat A COE segment. Its electric motor produces 110kW (148bhp) and 310Nm of torque. Fed by an 88.1kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, Kia claims a driving range of 540km. When plugged into a 141kW charger, the battery charges from 10% to 80% in 38 minutes.
