Hyundai Motor has announced that it has started production of the Kona Electric at its plant in the Czech Republic, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech (HMMC).
The plant is scheduled to manufacture more than 20,000 units of the Kona Electric in the car's first year of production, followed by a further 50,000 in 2024. These all-electric examples of the Kona will go towards Hyundai's commitment to sell only zero-emission vehicles in Europe by 2035.
Hyundai states that its decision to supplement its supply of vehicles from its Ulsan plant in South Korea with production at HMMC since 2020 has drastically reduced delivery times for customers in Europe.
HMMC expects the Kona Electric to take up to 15% of the plant's total production by late 2023, as examples manufactured by the site will be delivered to an additional 20 countries on top of the current 22 exclusively European markets it already supplies. These new countries include the U.K. and Ireland (which will a right-hand drive versions of the Kona), as well as Turkey and Israel.
HMMC will produce examples of the Hyundai Kona Electric equipped with either the 65.4kWh or the 48.4kWh battery.
