Opel has launched the new Astra here in Singapore.
The rival to options including the Volkswagen Golf and Mazda 3 hatchback now comes with a 129bhp 1.2-litre engine that puts out a total of 230Nm of torque.
Mated to an eight-speed gearbox, this engine is enough to see the hatchback reaching 100km/h from a standstill in 10.7 seconds. Fuel economy for this Astra is a claimed 18.9km/L.
For comparison, the Cat A-friendly Volkswagen Golf we tested in May 2023 also gets a 129bhp output, although its 1.5-litre engine develops a maximum of 200Nm of torque. This Golf will complete the century sprint in 9.4 seconds.
Up front, the Opel Astra sports a clean design, dominated by the black Opel Vizor panel that houses the front grille and integrates the head lights. And at the rear, the car gets slim, high-mounted taillights and the blitz logo mounted in the middle of the tailgate.
Two 10-inch displays sit within the dashboard in the cabin of the Opel Astra. Housed within what the firm terms as the Opel Pure Panel, these are said to have been designed to be detoxed of irritating visual stimuli, offering an optimum balance between digitisation and intuitive operation. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is supported by the Intellilink infotainment system here.
Further back, the Opel Astra a 422-litre boot, which swells to offer a total of 1,389 litres of cargo capacity with the 60:40 folding rear seats laid flat.
The Opel Astra comes to Singapore with a host of safety and driver assistance features including , Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Alert, and a nifty Panoramic Visual Assistance feature, which offers a bird's eye view of potential obstructions around the vehicle for stress-free parking.
