Subaru of America, Inc. has announced that the 2023 Ascent, Outback and Solterra SUVs have been awarded a 2023 Top Safety Pick+ by the U.S.A Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Subaru's Forester SUV and Legacy sedan has also earned the 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
The 2023 IIHS safety test have been updated to demand better side crash protection and improved pedestrian crash prevention systems. This round of testing has also eliminated subpar head lights from the field of qualifying vehicles.
The IIHS also launched an updated side crash test in 2021, which involves 82% more energy than the original test. Vehicles must earn an 'acceptable' or 'good' rating to qualify for the Top Safety Pick award, while a 'good' rating is required for a vehicle to net the Top Safety Pick+ award.
The criteria for a vehicle to win the Top Safety Pick+ award was also raised, with the inclusion of a new night time vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention test. Cars are expected to get an 'advanced' or 'superior' rating in this test to win a Top Safety Pick+ award.
