The Volkswagen Golf has clinched top honours for the segment once again, having convinced us with its well-rounded offerings.
To start, the car now comes equipped here with a more sensible Cat A COE-friendly 129bhp 1.5-litre engine. This output is less than the 148bhp the Golf used to offer when we first tested it last year, but with a healthy 200Nm of torque on tap, and paired with a fast-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the year's Golf is still able to effortlessly keep up with traffic.
And there's no compromise to your ability to enjoy comfortable drives with this Golf despite the drop in total power either. The engine is not only refined but also remarkably quiet, so even longer journeys with the hatchback never becoming tiring. Further aiding comfort levels is the accomplished manner in which the Golf is able to round off sharper edges from the road.
But where the Golf truly excels is in its cabin. Here, the firm's 8.25-inch 'Composition' infotainment system proves more than capable, displaying crisp colours and offering intuitive operation, the latter also being aided by the clever use of physical quick access buttons located between the air-conditioning vents. Build quality here is also commendable, with the switchgear all offering the sort of damping that just feels high-quality while being sensibly located, just as we have come to know from the rest of Volkswagen's range.
The fact that the Golf continues to offer such a wide set of abilities, while being more accessible than before, gives us reason to place it right at the top of the segment this year. |

Irresistible style, no doubt, has played a large part in the Peugeot 408's taking of the crown for the segment - the fastback is festooned with angles and design details everywhere you care to look.
Some commendable design touches include the vertical LED 'fangs' that sit below the car's head lights, the 20-inch wheels with their unique asymmetrical design, and of course, the gently sloping roof line at the rear.
But dig deeper and you'll find this Peugeot a lot more than just pretty sheet metal. Its 1.2-litre engine pulls it along with sufficient gusto, delivering a rorty note that we have come to love, while response from the unit is linear, making the car a predictable thing to pilot. Once you're up to speed, the Peugeot 408 will also impress with its pliant ride - the car simply floats over all sorts of unpleasant surfaces.
Step into the fastback and the car continues to deliver on style. Its dashboard design, with its varied material use and lines, looks outright futuristic. Thankfully, useability is hardly compromised by this radical design. The firm's 3D i-Cockpit now gets its fixed menu shortcuts replaced by customisable and digital ones for greater ease-of-use, and there's also plenty of customisation on offer from the car's infotainment system.
And of course, further back still, this Peugeot 408 offers a total of 536 litres of storage space within its boot - enough to fit a full-size bike, and to rival plenty of SUVs.
For offering a refreshing and distinctive style without compromising on useability, this Peugeot 408 deserves the top spot in the compact sedan category. |

The Mazda 6 has taken the lead for the sedan category, thanks to an update that sees it now getting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a new wireless smartphone charging pad, as well as a 360-degree camera system.
These features may not seem like much, but what won us over to the Mazda is the fact that they are all features that we, alongside the car's potential owners, are likely to use daily.
All these, of course, come packaged within a body that continues to captivate thanks to the use of gently flowing curves and elegant lines. The grille that sits at the front of the car also does it plenty of favours. It's rightly-sized, sporty yet premium, and simply elevates that Mazda 6 above the rest of the pack in its class.

It's not hard to see why the 7 Series is now the pick of the segment.
Those looking for a car that has all the road presence expected of a luxury sedan won't be left wanting with this BMW. It is 153mm longer, 59mm taller, and 48mm wider than before, and the car's new design is certainly unashamed to make these new dimensions known. Up front, the car's kidney grille is larger than before, allowing it to visually dwarf its predecessor.
But this 7 Series has not only grown larger; it has become more luxurious as well. Those slim head lights sport Swarovski crystals, which allow them to sparkle when they're illuminated. And its doors are now automatic, further elevating the kerbside appeal of BMW's new luxury sedan.
Step within the cabin of the 7 Series and there's plenty to admire as well. These include the 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display, the classy two-spoke steering wheel, as well as the Interaction Bar, which stretches across the width of the vehicle and doubles as the cabin's ambient lighting. Those seated at the rear also get their own 5.5-inch touch control display, which makes adjusting the music or air-conditioning settings just outright easy.

Crossovers are the most popular type of car today and the one model that stood out this year is the Suzuki S-Cross. Though not as digitised as its competitors, it nevertheless does a lot of things right, and its honest-to-goodness character won us over.
The S-Cross has a functional cabin layout and sound ergonomics. There's no need to dig around a touchscreen, as most of the controls are physical. That means proper dual-zone climate controls, buttons on the steering wheel and even a physical handbrake.
Speaking of touchscreens, the 9.0-inch infotainment display is user-friendly and offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In the backseat, occupants get plenty of headroom and good legroom, thanks to the 2,600mm wheelbase.
Its powertrain has been improved, too. Replacing the previous naturally aspirated 1.6-litre is a turbocharged 1.4-litre in-line-4 with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which produces 127bhp and 235Nm of torque.
On the go, the mild hybrid system provides an additional 'boost' from a standstill for smoother take-offs. Equally seamless is the six-speed automatic gearbox, which is more responsive than a typical CVT. The sprightly performance makes one look forward to driving it daily.
For sure, modern cars with their nifty gadgets and useful technologies are enjoyable. But down-to-earth models like the S-Cross are a rarity, and that's one of the big reasons why it's our Compact Crossover of the Year. |

Acknowledged as the model that started the crossover segment, the Qashqai is one of the most popular crossovers not just in Singapore, but globally, too. Nissan has imbued it with the right blend of spaciousness, comfort, approachability and looks, and buyers have responded accordingly.
So, rather than tweak the formula, Nissan stuck with it and improved the ingredients. The latest Qashqai gets plaudits for its upmarket and well-equipped interior, with eye-catching graphics for both the instrument panel and infotainment system.
Choose the Prestige variant and you also get a heads-up display, a Bose audio system with 10 speakers and a subwoofer, plus Nappa leather upholstery. These are amenities you'd normally find on premium or luxury models.
Also on-board is a suite of safety features that includes Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Intelligent Emergency Braking with Forward Collision Warning. These make the Qashqai more secure than ever, which is a key consideration for families.
In terms of performance, the Qashqai gets a turbocharged 1.3-litre four-cylinder capable of 156bhp and a stout 270Nm of torque, figures that deliver a sprightly 0-100km/h time of 9.2 seconds. And, unlike other CVT-equipped cars, the one in the Qashqai's is impressively refined.

This year's winning Premium Crossover is the BMW X1 and it's not hard to see why. The X1 is exactly what most consumers shopping in this segment are looking for: It's relatively large and spacious, has a long list of standard features, and is classified as a Cat A car.
Responsible for the latter point is BMW's buttery-smooth turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder, whose 122bhp and 230Nm are more than adequate for the daily commute. Keener drivers will enjoy the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which has a manual override function for more spirited drives.
There are plenty of goodies in the X1's cockpit as well. Powering the 10.25-inch instrument cluster and 10.7-inch infotainment display is BMW's OS 8, which boasts sharp graphics and customisable menus, among other features. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard items as well.
Other key elements include wireless smartphone charging, which comes with a 'holder' to keep the device in place, and a handy tab-like gearshift selector. Rear seat passengers enjoy good legroom and headroom, with comfort provided by air-con vents and two USB-C ports.
Crossovers are utilised by active folks and the X1 has them in mind as well. The 540-litre boot is commodious considering the car's position in BMW's lineup, as it's just 10 litres smaller than the one in the larger X3. Fold down the rear seats and the capacity nearly triples to 1,600 litres, giving you plenty of space for sports equipment or luggage, making the X1 a practical choice, too. |

Mazda CX-60

Mazda has reinvigorated the SUV segment with the CX-60, its latest entrant. Positioned between its smaller CX-5 and larger CX-8 siblings, the CX-60's updated Kodo design language and premium interior fittings show that the SUV is actually aimed at luxury competitors and not mass-market rivals.
Indeed, getting behind the wheel of the CX-60 is a revelation. The well-made cabin is built to impress, with top-quality leather and soft plastic trimmings, along with buttons and controls that emit satisfying clicks. The CX-60 also has Mazda's most advanced cockpit, featuring dual 12.3-inch TFT LCD displays for the instrument panel and infotainment.
Helping enhance comfort for backseat passengers is the 2,870mm wheelbase, along with more than ample legroom and foot space to stretch out. For an airier ambience, there's a panoramic sunroof as well.
Mazda is known for making fun-to-drive cars and the CX-60, despite its size, is no different. In fact, unlike other SUVs which are either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the CX-60 is surprisingly rear-wheel drive.
Its engine is also longitudinally mounted, unlike the other SUVs (and most cars) which have transversely mounted engines to save space. Mazda's naturally aspirated 2.5-litre inline-four does duty here, producing 189bhp and 261Nm of torque. It is paired to a seamless eight-speed automatic - the first Mazda model to be so-equipped.
The CX-60 is a breath of fresh air and a reason for luxury SUVs to look over their shoulders, and that's why it takes the award for 2023's Best SUV. |

Bigger, stronger, and more tightly put-together than before.
Merc's bestselling SUV returned in 2023 in the form of the second official generation of the GLC-Class, and thoroughly impressed us with the clear strides it had made over its predecessor.
On first glance, this may feel more like an evolution rather than revolution - especially because it follows the design language of the C-Class with its slimmer head and taillights (this is no bad thing, though, as the car feels at once elegant yet not overdesigned).
Nonetheless, step in, go for a drive and the changes will become more apparent. For starters, the GLC-Class is now longer and lower than before. Crucially, extra length has been added not just to its body, but to its wheelbase (an extension of 15mm) too, making it more adept at ferrying rear passengers. Its boot size is also class-leading; depress the automatic tailgate's button, and it will open up to 620 litres worth of hauling capacity.
More importantly, however, Merc has infused its latest tech, and touch of dazzling luxury into the car's cabin. Perhaps no other carmaker does ambient lighting as well today, while a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and a 11.9-inch tablet-like touchscreen for infotainment further reinforce the snazziness of the cockpit. There's no denying it: Among the Germans, it's the GLC's interior that brightly stands out.
Electrification has been thrown into the nameplate's mix for the first time, and over the past few months, it's admittedly the plug-in hybrid GLC300e that has drawn more attention. But drivers shouldn't think of themselves as getting a compromised package should they opt for the GLC300, which is the variant we considered for this category. Its mild hybrid assisted turbocharged 2.0-litre engine is a gutsy unit, pulling strongly even from low down in the rev range. At the same time, engine start/stop cycles are near imperceivable thanks to the 48-volt integrated starter-generator. What's more, this GLC300 is both the lighter and more affordable twin.
Above all, while the GLC of old may have weathered criticism for falling short of Merc's standards of excellence, the sharper, vastly-improved GLC of today readily earns the Three-Pointed Star-badge it wears on both its bonnet and trunk. In doing so, it also takes honours for our Premium Compact SUV of the year. |

Land Rover Range Rover Sport Mild Hybrid

Luxury doesn't require a loudhailer to be conveyed. Following in the footsteps of its non-Sport sibling, what immediately arrests you about the latest-generation Range Rover Sport is how simple its sheet metal is. (Parent company Land Rover calls this design language "reductive").
Its visually defining elements, such as the head and taillights as well as its front grille, all feature less prominently on the body of the car, allowing its strong front and monolithic slab-sidedness to define your overall impression of the car. As the English do it best perhaps, the word that strikes you time and again when looking at the car is 'stately'.
The theme of quiet luxury continues inside the car, where the cabin is cleanly-designed, yet also expensive in its look and feel. The cushioning on offer from the seat bases and headrests is notably softer than that in segment rivals, and most of the surfaces you'll immediately touch are softly-padded with sumptuous leather.
Meanwhile, the brand's signature rotary dials on the centre console that allow quick access to the A/C controls are also damped to perfection. On the note of minimalism, even the Pivi Pro system (here housed within a 13.1-inch infotainment screen) displays less outright information on its home screen, offering larger icons within its main menu.
Without overwhelming occupants, all these qualities enhance the perceived level of luxury, while also cohering with the car's preternatural gifts as a luxe-cruiser. Suspension pliancy is outstanding, and when left in 'Comfort' mode, the car's steering delivers good weightiness, complemented by a finely judged level of resistance offered by both the brake and accelerator pedals.
Having said that, the Range Rover Sport doesn't forget the last word in its name when the driver wants to hustle it around. Riding on - and benefiting from - a new MLA-Flex architecture (raising torsional stiffness by 35%), this handles better than its predecessor, even if its weight is hard to miss. And of course, the heart of the action is still its peachy 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six: Strong all through the rev range, paired with an equally smooth eight-speed transmission, and aurally pleasing (the car's beautiful cabin provides the best place from which to soak its burbles in).
Against its rivals, the Range Rover Sport may certainly cost a pretty penny more - but we'd also argue that few nail its ethos of simple splendour so delightfully. For that, it's surely worthy of being crowned 2023's Premium SUV of the year. |

The Maxus MIFA 9 brings something truly unique to the people-mover market in Singapore, for it is the first premium electric MPV that's built on a dedicated platform. MIFA is an acronym for Maximum, Intelligent, Friendly, and Artistic, which clearly indicates Maxus' aim with this model.
It certainly has plenty of road presence. With a length of 5,270mm and a wheelbase measuring 3,200mm long, it's no surprise that its interior is nothing short of cavernous.
Unlike other seven-seater MPVs with a 2+3+2 seat layout, the MIFA 9's seats are in a 2+2+3 layout. That means luxurious, electrically adjustable captain's chairs for the second-row passengers (who have the best seats in the 'house'), and easier ingress/egress for occupants in the last row.
Amenities here include a 220-volt outlet for those who need to charge their laptops on the go, a sliding panoramic sunroof, and secondary air-con controls on the ceiling. The large windows also help give the cabin a lighter and airier vibe.
Up front, the MIFA 9's fully digitised cockpit is as futuristic as its exterior design suggests. Minimalism is the name of the game here as instead of physical buttons on the dashboard, most of the functions are kept in the infotainment system, resulting in a very neat dashboard. Storage bins, along with the USB-C ports, make this space practical and useful as well.
The MIFA 9's silky smooth propulsion comes from an electric motor that's fed by a large capacity 90kWh lithium-ion battery. With 241bhp and 350Nm of torque, this people-mover quietly accelerates from rest to 100km/h in 9.2 seconds. With cushy damping, occupants are assured of a comfy ride.
It's big, futuristic, and has brought much to the table. There was no other model like the Maxus MIFA 9 in 2023, and that's why it's been crowned this year's MPV of the Year. |

Unlike its namesake, which was part of the Corolla family of economy cars, sharing drivetrain components with the Corolla sedan of its era, the GR86 was specifically developed as a two-door sports coupe for drivers.
From the introduction of the original Toyota 86, the platform has been lauded for its amazingly sharp handling and engaging driving experience. With the GR86, Toyota improved on the shortcomings that the original 86 had while enhancing its fun-to-drive characteristics.
One major change that the car received was a new engine. The original 86's 2.0-litre engine was not only down on torque, but it also had an unsatisfactory torque curve that made the engine notorious among car enthusiasts. The new 2.4-litre boxer engine remains to be naturally aspirated, however it now produces 31bhp and 45Nm more, resulting in an enjoyable power output of 228bhp, with 250Nm of torque coming on at just 3,700rpm.

Wagons are cool. There's just something about the extended roofline that works so well, and it isn't just about the practicality aspect of the increased cargo space and expanded cargo-loading aperture. And when you consider the popularity of wagons with car enthusiasts, it makes one wonder why it even took so long before BMW decided to come up with a Touring variant for the M3.
Since the original E30 M3 was launched in 1986, enthusiasts have been clamouring for a Touring variant, and the closest they have ever gotten to one was the E46 Touring Concept. You can only imagine how excited the performance wagon enthusiasts were when BMW finally decided to release the first-ever M3 Touring.
On the exterior, the main difference between the Touring and the M3 Sedan lies in its silhouette. Its extended roofline slightly tapers downwards to meet a muscular rear end flanked by bulging wheel arches, resulting in an achingly beautiful shape.

The idea of a performance car has always been associated with sleek supercars and sporty two-door coupes. Large SUVs aren't traditionally associated with performance, but these days there are quite a few of them that can easily outperform supercars from yesteryear. And the Audi SQ8 is one such beast.
With 500bhp and 770Nm of torque from a 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbocharged engine, the 2.3-tonne SQ8 can reach 100km/h from standing still in 4.1 seconds, and it will go on to reach a top speed of 250km/h. It is clear that the SQ8 will go really fast, but that isn't the only thing it does well.
With a strong and powerful engine, the SQ8 has a large amount of torque at its disposal, allowing it to get up to speed with minimal throttle input and with its engine revs kept low. This trait, along with the exceptionally well-insulated drive, means that there's little audible engine noises to break the comfortable experience that the SQ8 offers. The cushy ride provided by the adaptive air suspension further adds to the pleasant experience that you get to enjoy with the SQ8.
Built upon the Q8, which is Audi's flagship SUV, the SQ8 has plenty to offer with its premium interior that straddles luxury and sportiness perfectly. The Valcona leather upholstery with diamond stitching and front seats with ventilated and massage functions put across the message that this is a flagship luxury car. At the same time, the splashes of suede-like material and carbon fibre panels remind occupants of the car's sporting credentials.

Despite its name, the Corolla Cross Hybrid looks nothing like any of its spiritual predecessors on the outside. Someone that doesn't know any better likely wouldn't associate the car to the Corolla lineup if he had just seen the exterior of the car. However, if you were to open the door and take a gander inside, everything would immediately start to make sense - the dashboard has been lifted right from the Corolla Altis.
The similarities don't simply end at the interior - in fact the Corolla Cross is actually built on the same GA-C platform that underpins the other Corollas. Size wise, the Corolla Cross sits right between the subcompact Yaris Cross and the mid-sized RAV4, which is quite the sweet spot for a balance of drivability and space.
Powered by a 2.0-litre engine paired with an electric motor, the Corolla Cross has a combined output of 196bhp, offering an above-average performance for a family-oriented car. It will even complete the century sprint in a respectable 7.7 seconds. However, the most impressive part of this powertrain has got to be its ability to move off smoothly and silently off the line, making it perfect for city-driving and start-stop traffic environments.
The well-damped and composed suspension, along with the consistently quiet cabin, make it a pleasure to ride in the Corolla Cross. Put the excellent fuel efficiency of 18.8km/L into consideration, and you'll quickly realise that that Corolla Cross could very well be the perfect family car that balances practicality, efficiency and ease of driving. Once a boxy, rough-round-the-edges softroader, the Nissan X-Trail has undergone a surprising maturation on its fourth official rodeo (with four eyes now too), while gaining (partial) electrification for the first time on our roads.
In fact, we'd go as far as to say that as specced for the Singapore market, Nissan's largest here is even creeping slightly into premium territory.
Nissan fans should already be familiar with the firm's unique e-POWER drivetrain - the car's wheels are driven solely by electric power, while the on-board combustion engine is used purely to power the battery feeding the power. But as the flagship of the lineup in Singapore, the X-Trail expands on this principle in novel ways.
For one, a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine lies under the hood - a far more capable generator than the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine used in pre-existing e-POWER models. Secondly, it's used to power two electric motors, as opposed to the single one on siblings like the Kicks and Serena.
Apart from unleashing better performance (211bhp and 330Nm of torque to be exact), the two motors residing separately on the front and rear axle manage power delivery and braking to each individual wheel to give a driver more control. It also gives the X-Trail some genuine (if only slight) off-road capabilities, helping it to stand out from its more tarmac-oriented peers.
Naturally, buyers of the X-Trail are likely to spend 99.99% of their time on Singapore's roads instead, and here, the SUV is thoroughly satisfying to live with.
As expected by those output figures, this is a decently brisk machine that masks its weight and size with its pace and all-round visibility respectively (just don't throw it hard around bends). Furthermore, Nissan has arguably been crafting the best interiors among the Japanese carmakers as of late, and the current X-Trail confidently asserts its place as the local flagship. Front occupants are treated to a good amount of digital real-estate; switchgear, swivel knobs and buttons are well-damped; Nappa leather is even offered as an add-on.
Above all, however, the X-Trail is a potent package for the demographic it's aimed at: Families. That third row might just be for kids, but its versatility as a 5+2 seater is undeniable, and its second row is wonderfully commodious in instances you only need to ferry five. |

No other luxury carmaker does hybrids like Lexus does. And as with the rest of its family, the RX nameplate was a soothsayer-cum-early adopter of sorts in that it had already brought electrification to the world of high-riders very early on - at the turn of the century.
Repeatedly remoulded and then polished towards its fifth-generation now, what has resulted with the latest RX 350h is a prime example of a car made by a brand that's confident it knows exactly what its customers want. In its current sheet metal, the car is also the most visually striking that it's ever been - thanks especially to a grille that appears to fade seamlessly upwards into the bonnet.
Task it to Lexus to give a large SUV the astounding ability to be more fuel-efficient than even some compact sedans and hatchbacks. With its 2.5-litre naturally aspirated inline-four paired to an electric motor, getting between 16-17km/L is no challenge for the RX. Power is more than sufficient, too; the 247bhp and 270Nm of torque send the car to 100km/h from rest in 7.9 seconds. Both figures are respectable considering this weighs in at a hefty 2,590kg unladen.
Efficiency and power are but two parts of the larger equation, however, for where the RX's hybrid drivetrain also comes crucially into the picture is in delivering quiet comfort. It can be trusted to allow the car to roll about silently in EV mode at lower speeds. With the car's platform and body now notably stiffer than before, occupants are also better shielded from noise and vibrations from the road.
In the process, they'll also be able to take in the understatedly beautiful cabin that Lexus has crafted for the RX. Against its German contemporaries, for example, you won't find dazzling colours or dashboard-covering screens here - but that doesn't mean the interior isn't awash with soft, expensive-feeling materials. A comforting mixture of suede and leather meets the backs of occupants as they settle into the seats; the black ash wood on the centre console matches that on the steering wheel; and the criss-crossing patterns on the velvet-finished door panels also softly coo "expensive".
Sure, some rivals might do the 'luxury' bits more ostentatiously - but taken as a whole, none embody the title of 'Premium Hybrid SUV' as faithfully as the RX of today. |

It may be the brand's third offering in Singapore, but the MG 4 is sharply removed from the MG 5 and MG ZS that preceded it.
Of course, it starts with the design. With a distinctive and sporty design, it is precisely the sort of car that will get heads turning and people talking. This hatchback is certainly one of the more visually attractive models in the market today. It looks progressive and modern, which is entirely fitting with the personality of the car.
On the inside, the MG 4 continues to impress with high levels of sensibility and practicality. Legroom and kneeroom is sufficient for rear passengers, and the soft headrests speak to the overall comfort of the car.
Most significantly, the MG 4 feels high quality in the way it drives. Based on the new Modular Scalable Platform architecture, the low placement of the battery pack allows for a low centre of gravity and 50:50 weight distribution.
Combined with well-damped suspension and good body control, the MG 4 rewards the keen driver - it handles well through corners (the well-weight steering helps), and creeps pleasingly into hot hatch territory.
But it's not just about spirited driving, either. The MG 4 is quiet on the move, even at highway speeds, and the sizeable battery and healthy energy consumption means that you can easily cover over 400km on a single charge.
When it comes to entry-level electric hatchbacks, two things seem to matter more than most: Price, and range. On these fronts, the MG 4 delivers - it's priced very competitively and offers up a more than healthy range. But beyond just that, the MG 4 also delivers a pleasingly high-quality driving experience, which helps sets it apart from the competition and make it our electric hatchback of the year. |

The headline-grabbing numbers speak for themselves - in Performance trim, the Seal delivers 523bhp, 670Nm of torque, and a 0-100km/h timing of 3.8 seconds. The car goes as far as to wear a 3.8S badge on its tailgate.
But, the numbers don't tell the whole story. While it is undoubtedly fast in a straight line, the BYD Seal is more than just a drag race machine. The rigid platform and firm suspension allow the Seal to be agile, stable and capable through corners and sharp directional changes, while still being refined and composed while cruising.
The Seal also comes equipped with a range of driving assistance systems that allows you to cruise along the highway with minimal driver intervention.
All together, there is an overall sense of quality to the way to Seal performs on the road, across a variety of driving situations, that far exceeds simple straight-line performance.

For the first time ever, BMW's flagship sedan has traded combustion power for electric motors. The result? An elevated experience of no-holds-barred luxury, in what persists as one of the boldest and most forward-looking limousines on the market.
Let's talk performance first.
Boasting 536bhp and 750Nm of instant torque in the xDrive60 variant, the i7 is a reservoir of endless power; put your foot down to the pedal, and the century sprint is demolished in a scant 4.7 seconds. (That's a full two seconds quicker than its combustion-powered twin, the 735i - already no slouch itself.) Hustle it along larger, sweeping bends, and you'll find it even offers a slightly more engaging drive, since its lower centre of gravity, aided by its underfloor-mounted batteries, helps to control side-to-side weight shifts.
But we digress - b-road bombing doesn't really fall under the i7's remit; neither do we suspect spirited drives to be foremost on the minds of those buying a 2.7 tonne luxury barge. Instead, where it benefits from its electric propulsion - and perhaps puts itself ahead of its combustion-engined twin - is with how effortless and refined it is on the move. Imagine a spaceship (those in action films, not real-life rockets used for space travel): Eerily quiet as the scenery is sent whooshing by in a blur. Unless, of course, you've decided to turn the Hans Zimmer-produced IconicSounds on.
The silence, in turn, only serves to amplify the splendour that greets occupants when they step into the i7's cabin. One gets the sense that BMW threw everything possible out of its playbook at the car: An impossibly soft and supportive rear bench, vegan-leather that doesn't trade suppleness for sustainability credentials, and of course, all the eye-watering tech in the world (5.5-inch touch displays as standard; a 31-inch Theatre Screen as an option).
Some time has passed now since the world saw - reacted to - the first images of the current 7 Series/i7. And where BMW's vision for its historical flagship may have felt unclear back then, the picture has slowly come into focus.

Wagons are cool. That's just a fact.
When it comes to the Editorial Pick for 2023, there were plenty of impressive choices - spanning cheerful hatchbacks, roaring performance coupes, and of course broad selection of electric cars as well.
However, one thing stood out with the 3 Series Touring - personality.
It does begin with the wagon bodystyle. It's visually different and uncommon especially here in Singapore, but on this new generation model the additional heft at the rear actually accentuates the car's macho design.
It's also vastly practical. You get a large cargo capacity (500 litres) accessible via a large loading aperture, and the additionality functionality of being able to open the rear windscreen to quickly access items in the boot.
The rest of the car is 3 Series goodness - a premium, high quality interior packed with technology, excellent ride damping that balances comfort and sportiness well, and a capable drivetrain as well.
The result is a car that has all the space and practicality of an SUV, yet the driving dynamism and visual cohesion of something more akin to a sedan. And that balance - between sense and style, between performance and practicality - is exactly the personality of this car.
Wagons are cool. Not just as a simple bodystyle, but because in an automotive world that appears to be trending towards homogeneity, a car like the 3 Series Touring stands out by being almost stubbornly its own thing. 2023 has been a pretty buzzy year for BYD, headlined perhaps by the brand-new Seal and its blistering 3.8 second 0-100km/h timing.
However, when it comes to making electric mobility practical and accessible for the masses, it is BYD's Atto 3 that is most worthy of attention. And, a newly introduced Cat A model this year definitely helps BYD's cause.
It's easy to understand the appeal of a car like the Atto 3. The Atto 3, while perhaps quirky in design and personality, is in fact a very accomplished EV. It's packed full of technology and features, is plenty comfortable on the trot, and manages to eke out a solid 380km of range from its 60.5kWh battery.
The Cat A variant delivers even more value for money - you get the same features as the Cat B model and similar enough performance in day-to-day driving situations, all for less money.
Customers are also responding well - in the first half of 2023 alone, 287 Atto 3s were registered, and that number continues to climb throughout the year (subsequent months saw 3 figure registrations per month).
It's little wonder, then, that it is the Sgcarmart's Top Viewed Model in 2023. |

When Opel originally launched the Grandland X back in 2017, the formula was straightforward enough - a family-friendly crossover body, a wallet-friendly 1.2-litre engine, and budget-friendly amount of equipment. It was a generally inoffensive crossover, though admittedly perhaps not the most interesting to look at.
With its facelift, Opel has clearly made attempts to make the Grandland more ‘interesting', but also generally better.
Besides dropping the X from the name, the facelifted Grandland gets a new face - in line with the brand's ‘Vizor' design language, the Grandland now has a slim and clean exterior façade, which helps it to stand apart amidst a sea of crossovers today.
Inside, there are added touches of modernity. There is increasing digitalisation that's to be expected (such as the fully digital dashboard), but the change to a new gear lever is part of an overall tidying up of the cabin. The result is a cleaner, neater cabin that prioritises functionality and practicality, two things the Grandland scores high on.
Of course, with a generous 514-litre trunk and good amounts space for the three rear passengers (who als get their own air-con vents), the Grandland continues to be a family-friendly crossover.
Underneath the bonnet, the powerplant is unchanged - a 1.2-litre turbocharged engine producing 129bhp and 230Nm of torque. It delivers adequate performance and is quite refined. And yet, to make the powertrain even more wallet-friendly, the engine is now mated to an eight-speed transmission, which helps improve efficiency, as well as overall refinement.
Improvement can be difficult to quantify. With the facelifted Grandland, what's most perceptible is a distinct effort to be more present and noticeable in buyers' minds - the underlying mechanical package has always been solid, but this facelift brings with it a necessary injection of visual excitement and overall refinement, thus worthy of recognition as our pick for the most improved car this year. |

On one hand, this is somewhat inevitable as the industry moves increasingly (and quickly) towards electrification - electric options are growing for the customer, across the breadth of the market segments. But, it is also indicative of the big strides that brands are taking when it comes to EVs, and the rapidly improving products as well.
Which brings us to the Ioniq 5.
In 2023, Hyundai has made a bold statement here in Singapore. The launch of key electric models such as this Ioniq 5 and the Ioniq 6, yes, but also the opening of the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Centre - where the Ioniq 5 is being assembled, right here in Singapore.
And, it's a car that's made to impress. The distinct, retrofuturistic design is immediately attention-grabbing and conversation-starting, and cuts a distinct figure on the road.
Slide inside the spaceship-esque shell and you are greeted by a spacious and minimalist interior. The dedicated E-GMP platform affords the Ioniq 5 generous amounts of interior space, while equipment levels are also high.
However, what stands out is the build quality. From the sharp graphics to the tactile switchgear, to the good choice of materials and the excellent finish in terms of how everything is put together, the Ioniq 5 exudes a 'expensiveness' that belies its price point.
It is also an EV, so how it performs on the road really matters. Quick enough, comfortable and with a healthy-sized battery, it is capable and sensible for a family SUV. It's not the quickest nor does it have the biggest battery (though there will be variants with both those things), but the Ioniq 5, even in Cat A form, just works. It's an easy to drive, sensible to use, fairly quick to charge electric SUV that will see to the needs of everything typical family.
And that's what it comes down to - the typical family. While some EVs may boast big, attention grabbing numbers (which pricetags to match), the typical driver going electric needs something practical, usable and attainable.
What elevates the Ioniq 5 is its outsized quality. The Ioniq 5 represents both the present and the future. Right now, it's a satisfying family SUV that scores high on functionality and practicality. Looking ahead, it's also a highly capable and fully featured EV that's never dull to drive or sit in. And considering its price point and positioning, it delivers a level of quality and refinement that exceeds expectations.
For those reasons, it is our 2023 Car of the Year. The fact that it is made-in-Singapore? Just one more cherry on the top. |
