Determining this year's winning Electric Premium Crossover was a tough process, as the four nominees are all strong contenders. But the more we thought about it, the more obvious the answer became: It must be the MINI Countryman.
Traditionalists will balk and say that the Countryman is the opposite of what MINI stands for. But we beg to differ, for the Countryman reflects the brand. It is the biggest MINI model, but it is also unconventional. Now, what could be more ‘MINI' than that?
The Countryman's design stands out in a growing sea of similar-looking crossovers. Where other brands have gone for the ‘minimalist' look, the Countryman boasts strong design language, using bold shapes to give the model a unique mien and character.
Inside, you'll find delightful details like the 9.4-inch round display with punchy graphics, toggle switches on the centre console, and in a nod to drivers of a particular vintage, a Start/Stop function that requires you to turn it like you would a conventional key.
The Countryman though, is thoroughly modern, with features such as a voice-activated assistant and numerous Experience Modes that when selected, change the display and sound effects. What a fun, fun car!
The Countryman is available in two versions: A front-wheel drive Countryman E with 201bhp, and a more powerful Countryman SE with 308bhp and all-wheel drive. Whichever one you choose, you can be sure that your ownership experience is going to be a uniquely interesting one.
