The billion-dollar Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP) has seen the delivery of 450 state-funded buses on the road as of last month - up from 361 at the end of June - reported The Straits Times. The new fleet of buses makes up just under 10 percent of Singapore's total public bus fleet of 4,600 units, and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the cohort will reach 550 units by the end of 2014.
The accelerated fleet expansion was an urgent response to increasing public transport ridership. The English daily also revealed that the additional buses have allowed operators to ramp up service frequency, especially during peak hours.
144 out of the existing 275 basic bus services have improved since the BSEP commenced two years ago, revealed LTA. Besides enlarging the bus fleet, 31 new services have been rolled out which includes 10 City Direct services that mimic MRT routes.
Among the new services are 324 and 386, operated by SBS Transit, which connect commuters in Hougang and Punggol to MRT stations and bus interchanges. Similarly, five more new services will be launched in the forthcoming months in estates such as Bukit Batok, Changi, Jurong East, Kallang and West Coast.
In addition, since the introduction of the service enhancement programme, waiting times on popular routes have shortened by three to seven minutes, while crowded services have also seen improvements.
In March, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew announced that BSEP would be enhanced further to fund 1,000 new buses instead of the original 550. All 1,000 buses will be on the road by 2017, while the cost of the programme is expected to double from the original $1.1 billion. Besides purchasing the buses, the programme will pay for operating costs such as driver salaries for a decade.
