Formula One legend Michael Schumacher was involved in a ski accident in France and is now in a coma. The seven-time racing champion sustained serious brain injuries after he fell and struck his head on a rock in the French Alps.
After the accident, Schumacher was attended to by Mountain Police and was air lifted to the local hospital, then to a hospital in the French city of Grenoble for treatment. A specialist neurosurgeon from Paris was then rushed in to attend to the 44-year old motorsports star.
Schumacher displayed agitation but remained conscious after the accident, which led the doctors into thinking that his injuries were not life threatening. It was only when he fell into a coma that the doctors realised the damage was far worse than they have imagined.
Schumacher took part in his first Grand Prix in 1991 with Team Jordan as a stand-in for Belgian driver Bertrand Gachot, who was jailed. Despite having completed only 500 metres in the race, he had a storming start which caught the eyes of many. Ever since then, there was no looking back for the German, who went on to join Benetton, and thereafter Ferrari.
Despite having retired from the sport, Michael Schumacher still has his name firmly secured in the history of Formula One racing. Some of his records include being the only driver to have won seven championship titles, and an unprecedented 91 race wins.
