Acura has announced that it will take a race-prepped Integra Type S as well as an Acura NSX Type S Active Aero Study to the 2023 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
The HPD Integra Type S race car will compete in the 'Exhibition' division driven by Loni Unser. The Unsers were the first family to race in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, a tradition that began in 1926 with Louis and Joe Unser.
The Acura NSX Type S Active Aero Study gets a custom carbon fibre bodywork that optimises downforce for the hill climb Acura states the car will sport a unique anime-style wrap that will tie it to the new second season of the animated series Chiaki's Journey. The HPD Integra Type S race car will sport a custom hood, front splitter, and swan-neck carbon fibre rear wing, alongside a Borla exhaust.
Also set to make the run up Pikes Peak is a Acura NSX Type S Active Aero Study (read more about the NSX Type S here), the next project from Acura's new HART skunkworks division, after this 800bhp CR-V racer that is. Nicknamed 'Yamabiko' (a mythological mountain god or spirit in Japanese folklore), the Acura NSX Type S Active Aero Study features a custom carbon fibre bodywork that significantly improves the supercar's ability to maintain downforce and reduce drag.
Shaped inside the new Honda Automotive Laboratories of Ohio (HALO) facility, the NSX's radical design incorporates active aero technology, including a dynamic rear wing, which acts as a drag reduction system (DRS) to increase speed on faster sections of the track. To help slow the hybrid-powered supercar under heavy braking, the electrically actuated rear spoiler deploys as an air brake, increasing drag and improving balance.
The Acura NSX Type S Active Aero Study will be driven by Honda engineer and experienced Pikes Peak Racer James Robinson.
