The 2024 Singapore Motor Show may be behind us for now, but that doesn't mean that there isn't still a lot for us to look forward to in the months to come.
More specifically, those on the hunt for something a hybrid MPV will soon have another fresh option to take out on a test drive: The all-new Nissan Serena e-POWER.
Brought out for a special showcase over the weekend, this MPV marks the second generation in which the Serena nameplate has gotten Nissan's unique e-POWER drivetrain.
Unlike petrol-electric drivetrains used by other carmakers (in which both the engine and electric motor are used to power the car's wheels), e-POWER models are driven purely by electric power. Where the onboard engine comes in is to function solely as a generator for a small battery, which in turn, powers the electric motor.
On first glance, the highlight of the new Serena e-POWER may appear to be its styling, which sees an evolution of Nissan's v-shaped grille now finished in horizontal chrome slats. These are integrated perfectly with the car's head lights.
But the car also carries significant changes underneath. Namely, the Serena is now equipped with second-generation e-POWER technology, which uses a more powerful 1.4-litre petrol engine as a generator (the outgoing model relies on a 1.2-litre engine instead). Apart from more power, Nissan says this new system delivers smoother acceleration and less engine noise.
The Serena's new dashboard and steering wheel also look far more sophisticated than those on the outgoing model
In line with its more recently-launched sibling, the X-Trail e-POWER, the new Serena also has a dashboard that looks cleaner and more upmarket than before. As is the trend with modern cars, a seamlessly connected panel appears to connect two screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment screen.
The finalised list of equipment and features cannot be confirmed currently, as the Serena e-POWER has yet to be officially launched. Nonetheless, Tan Chong Motor Sales, Nissan's local authorised dealer, has made it clear that two variants will be available, including the Premium 8-Seater, and Highway Star Prestige 7-Seater. The latter will come with individual chairs in the second row.
Sgcarmart understands that the car could go on sale as early as the second quarter of 2024.
The showcase of the new Serena e-POWER was ultimately part of a larger lineup of electrified models brought by Nissan over the weekend.
Other e-POWER cars that were featured included the Note e-POWER, facelifted Kicks e-POWER, X-Trail e-POWER, and first-generation Serena e-POWER, alongside the mild hybrid Qashqai. Intriguingly, the booth also featured a larger-than-life installation of a cup of instant noodles, which illustrated the instant torque provided by the e-POWER system.
Nissan also had fully-electric models on hand, including the Leaf hatchback, and the Ariya crossover, which was also previewed in 2023, but has yet to go on sale in Singapore.
