When the latest iteration of BMW's 2 Series compact coupe was introduced, the top-of-the line model was the M240i. But everyone knew that an even more exciting model was well on its way - the M2. When the all new M2 finally reached our shores, the media were invited to a preview of it in the Eurokars showroom located at 29 Leng Kee Road.
Equipped with the same engine that you'll find in the current BMW M3 and M4, along with chassis technology derived from them, the compact M2 coupe is an ultimate driver's car with plenty of power and excellent agility to match.
Now in its second generation, the M2 has an athletic appearance with extremely powerful proportions.
Up front, the large frameless BMW kidney grille with horizontal bars are unique to the M2 and reminiscent of the recently introduced BMW XM.
A three-section lower intake with almost rectangular contours gives the car an aggressive and distinct M look.
Compared to the standard 2 Series Coupe, the M2 has a much wider track width. In fact, both its front and rear track widths are identical to the M4, despite having a much shorter wheelbase.
Not only does the widened track translate into improved handling, it also resulted in the dramatically flared arches, which works together with the M2's sharp and aggressive design elements to create an imposing look.
At the rear, once again you'll find sharp, blocky elements on the bumper that matches the front intake section. Completing the rear end are two pairs of exhaust tips that evokes a recognisable M style.
Under the bonnet, you'll find the same 3.0-litre straight-six engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology that is in the M3 and M4.
In the M2, the engine produces 453bhp and 550Nm, which is a fair bit more than its predecessor, and it also revs up to a maximum of 7,200rpm for an exhilarating drive.
The potent power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission as standard. An option for a six-speed manual gearbox is also available and will be the configuration for the limited-offer Purist Edition M2 in Singapore.
The Active M Differential at the rear axle is included as standard, and it allows traction to be optimised and improves power transfer when accelerating hard out of corners by generating a locking effect of up to 100% when required.
The all new M2 combines its compact dimensions, short wheelbase, almost perfectly balanced weight distribution and sophisticated chassis technology to deliver precise and controllable handling to complement its powerful engine.
The excellent dynamism of the M2 is made possible due to the torsional stiffness of its body structure and chassis mountings thanks to bespoke bracing.
A high-level of standard equipment further adds on to the driving experience of the M2.
You get Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Servotronic steering with variable ratio, Dynamic Stability Control including M Dynamic Mode, and M Compound brakes with six-pistons at the front and single-piston at the rear.
Also included as standard equipment with the M2 here is the carbon fibre roof that is offered as an option in other regions.
Inside, the M2 sports a cockpit with a driver-centric design, reminiscent of the M3 and M4's.
BMW's latest Operating System 8 with its curved display takes centre stage in the interior.
M Sport seats with integral head restraints are standard equipment, while M Carbon bucket seats are available as an option should you wish to take it up a notch.
At launch, the BMW M2 is priced at $380,000 without COE. A Purist Edition equipped with six-speed manual transmission will also be available in the future.
Customers who wish to view the all new BMW M2 can contact Eurokars Auto or Performance Motors Limited to make an appointment. The first 10 individuals to place a deposit with any authorised dealer will get to enjoy a BMW Driving Experience in Buriram, Thailand.
