The first round of bidding for December saw Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums for Cat A bouncing back after last session's $10,000 dive, even as Cat B and Cat E both mark their fourth consecutive session that saw their premiums dropping.

The recent launch of the Honda Freed e:HEV, which has also been appearing at a host of roadshows across the island, may have buoyed the premium for Cat A this session.

Cat A COE - Bouncing back up

Premiums for Cat A, for cars up to 1,600cc in engine capacity and with an output of no more than 130bhp or electric vehicles with a power output of up to 110kW, bounced back from last session's $10,000 dive this session, climbing up by $4,111 (4.6%) to bring the premium for the category to $94,000.

The current premium now stands at just 4.7% above the 12-month trailing average. The total number of number of bids submitted exceeded the number of successful bids this round by 42%, lower than the 12-month average of 57% for the category.

Cat B COE - Still slowly slipping downwards

Premiums for Cat B, for larger cars with more than 130bhp or engine displacements larger than 1,600cc or electric vehicles with a power output of more than 110kW, continued to slip this session, making the fourth consecutive session that premiums for the category have slipped. This session saw premiums for the category slipping by $2,071 (2.0%) to settle at $103,010.

This slip means the current premium for the category is now 1.8% below the 12-month trailing average. The total number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the quota available by 26%. This is lower than the 12-month average figure for the category of 54%

Cat C COE - Climbing up

Premiums for Cat C, for goods vehicles and buses, climbed this session by $1,289 (1.9%) to close at $70,289. The number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the available quota by 60%, lower than the 12-month average for this category of 65%.

Cat E COE - Also slowly heading downwards

Premiums for Cat E, the open category, slipped this session by a total of $3,500 (3.3%) to reach $104,001.

The current premium for the category is now 2.0% below the 12-month trailing average. The total number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the quota available by 82%, on par with the 12-month average figure for the category of 82%.

Prevailing Quota Premium

The Prevailing Quota Premium is the amount to be paid for COE renewal and is computed from the moving average of the previous three-months of COE prices. Those looking to renew the COE on their cars will thus have to pay the following prices for the respective months.
