Ford is joining criminal fighting in the U.S.A by launching the electrified 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle. This high tech pickup will join the legacy of Ford police vehicles which have outsold all other police vehicles in the country combined.
So, what differentiates this law enforcing F-150 from run of the mill ones? Firstly, it features specialised equipment for departmental needs outside of pursuit situations, such as assisting at an accident or crime scene and giving departments the ability to tow a boat or trailer.
Other features on the special Ford F-150 Lightning include police grade heavy duty cloth seats with reduced bolsters to help holstered officers enter and exit the vehicle with ease, as well as built in steel intrusion plates in the front seatback and red/blue, amber/white roof-mounted LED warning beacons. There is also an upfit friendly reinforced instrument panel top tray for mounting of police equipment.
Performance of the truck is properly rapid, with an output of 446bhp , 1,051nm of torque and a zero to 100 time of less than four seconds. With that immense torque figure, the truck is able to tow 3,493kg of capacity and a 1,014kg maximum payload. With the extended range battery, power is bumped up to 572bhp while the torque figure mains the same. With the additional power, towing capacity rises to 4,536kg.
Being a Ford Pro vehicle means that it is highly connected. The truck is able to seamlessly connect to a department's existing fleet of Ford and non-Ford internal combustion engine and battery-electric vehicles, chargers, and fleet management software. When used together, police departments can proactively manage when vehicles are charged and serviced, resulting in potentially lower operating costs and improved uptime.
