Hyundai has announced that it will be extending its collaboration with marine conservation organisation Healthy Seas for another year. A total of four clean-ups and several educational activations are currently planned by the partnership.
The firms will now extend their ocean cleanup efforts to a global scale, after having worked to clean up the Tossa de Mar since 2021, a highly polluted marine area in Spain.
The two firms have already kicked off their 2023 activities with a two-day clean up in the same region, which saw eight volunteer Divers removing a large gill net covering a reef. A host of marine organisms were rescued from the net during the operation, while various trammel nets as well as a broken crab pot were also retrieved.
Once back on land, the team cut and sorted the collected debris by type, allowing the material to be regenerated by sustainable textile firm Aquafil to be turned to Econyl yarn. This material will go into a variety of new products, including the floor mats of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6.
