Ineos Automotive is about to make the transition into a full-fledged automotive manufacturer with the first prototypes of its Grenadier off-road SUV now being manufactured at its Hambach plant.
The firm first announced its acquisition of Hambach plant from Mercedes-Benz in 2020, and since has invested over $76 million to outfit the production line to manufacture the new Grenadier.
The firm is nearing the end of its first production try-out phase, which will see 130 examples of the Grenadier being built at the Hambach site The line now includes a new fully-automated bodyshop, a new semi-automated paintshop, and an upgraded general assembly facility. Hambach also benefits from a new high-tech quality assessment centre.
Ineos states that it is now reaching near the end of its first production try-out phase, which included the building of 130 examples of the Grenadier to define the assembly process and also provide the engineering team with production-representative vehicles for final rounds of testing and certification.
Phase two of its production try-out will start in March 2022 to validate the assembly process and build quality, before production of launch series vehicles proves out the supply chain, logistics, and build rate.
