Lexus recalls the HS 250h...again

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Lexus has recalled 17,000 of its hybrid HS 250h saloons. This time, it's for an excessive petrol leak during a rear crash test.

During the 80 km/h rear impact test, a small amount of petrol leaked from the HS 250h's fuel tank. The leak could cause serious injury, or death in the event of a serious rear collision.

Lexus disputes the test results, saying the HS 250h has already passed rear-impact testing. However, they are investigating the problem. Meanwhile, Toyota has ordered its Lexus dealers to stop selling the cars until it can find a solution to the problem.

Back in February, Toyota had to recall 14,500 HS 250h's to update the software used to control the Anti-Lock Brake systems.

No injuries, or deaths have been reported in either recall.

The Lexus HS 250h is the first hybrid to be designed solely for the luxury brand. Despite similarities to the Prius, the HS 250h rides on a much larger chassis, and uses a 2.4 litre Atkinson-cycle 4-cyl petrol engine, along with a battery-powered electric motor.

Horsepower in the HS 250h is a combined 187 bhp. By contrast, the Prius only makes 138 bhp.
