Peugeot is celebrating more than 10 years (and at least three significant updates along the way) since it introduced the distinct i-Cockpit concept we now immediately associate with its cars.
Back in 2012, the first-generation Peugeot 208 supermini was the first car to incorporate the i-Cockpit. Three core elements come together as the pillars of the concept - including an elevated driver's display, a large central touchscreen, and of course, a delightfully compact steering wheel.
The three pillars: A compact steering wheel, elevated driver's display, and large central touchscreen Apart from striving to create what Peugeot calls a more "emotive" driving experience, the i-Cockpit first came about when the firm was looking to improve the ergonomics and safety of its cars.
Having a more compact steering wheel, for instance, is intended to make the car more responsive and agile to a driver's inputs. Meanwhile, raising the instrument cluster to near-eye-level was done with the intention of reducing strain for the driver's eyes. In all, the i-Cockpit has also been an aesthetic marker of sorts for Peugeot, considering that the concept underpins the unmistakable dash design found on the firm's modern cars.
Naturally, the i-Cockpit has continued to evolve over the years.
The latest iteration of the i-Cockpit now includes touch-sensitive i-toggles beneath the touchscreen The second generation 3008 and 5008 brought with them a 12.3-inch digital display in 2016, while the second-generation 208 introduced a 3D digital driver's cluster in 2019.
The latest and most refreshed i-Cockpit can now be found on the 308 hatchback and wagon, and all new 408 fastback (which received a local launch recently at the 2023 Singapore Motor Show). It introduces a new i-Connect infotainment system, touch-sensitive i-toggles for functions including air conditioning and application launch settings, as well as a new compact steering wheel that works in concert with safety assistance systems.
Peugeot says it is not done with evolving the i-Cockpit - and has pointed to the Inception Concept as a taster for what's to come next.
Promising even more automation and intuition, one highlight of the new concept is the 'Hypersquare' - a steer-by-wire, rectangular shaped steering wheel with four main circular functions.
Peugeot says this will bring with it "revolutionary new steering control, offering new gestures for a new generation, brought up on tablets and devices".
