In the first round of bidding for March, Certificate of Entitlement (COE) premiums for Cat A and B climbed, while premiums for Cat E slipped.

The past weeks could have seen increased new car buying activity as a result of the recent news of the increase in Additional Registration Fee rates.

Cat A COE - A $1,444 climb

Premiums for Cat A, for cars up to 1,600cc in engine capacity and with an output of no more than 130bhp, or electric vehicles with a power output of up to 110kW, climbed this session by $1,444 (1.7%), ending at $88,000.

This climb sees premiums for the category now standing at 10% above the 12-month trailing average. This price is now at the 87th percentile of prices across the last 12 months.

The total number of bids submitted this session exceeded the number of unsuccessful bids this round by 29%, lower than the 12-month average of 39% for the category.


Cat B COE - Holding largely steady

Premiums for Cat B, for larger cars with more than 130bhp or engine displacements larger than 1,600cc, or electric vehicles with a power output of more than 110kW, only witnessed a small climb this session. Premiums in the category rose by $500 (0.4%), to settle at $115,501.

This new climb in premiums for the category has brought the current price to 10.4% above the 12-month trailing average. Premiums for the category are now at their highest next to the premiums of the last 12 months.

The total number of unsuccessful bids this round exceed the quota available by 46%, higher than the 12-month average figure for this category of 40%.


Cat C COE - Climbing above Cat A premiums

Premiums for Cat C, for goods vehicles and buses, climbed this session by $3,311 (3.8%), to close at $91,101.

The number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the available quota by 51%, lower than the 12-month average for this category of 115%.


Cat E COE - The only category to fall this round

Cat E, the open category, slipped only by $2,001 (1.7%) this session. This slip sees the premium for the category ending at $116,000.

This new slip means current premiums for the category are now at 8.9% above the 12-month trailing average.

The number of unsuccessful bids this round exceeded the available quota by 92%. The 12-month average for this figure for the category is 70%.


Prevailing Quota Premium

The Prevailing Quota Premium is the amount to be paid for COE renewal and is computed from the moving average of the previous three-months of COE prices. Those looking to renew the COE on their cars will thus have to pay the following prices for the respective months.
